2005 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New models expand superb new lineup. introductionford f-150 has been the best-selling full-size pickup for 27 consecutive years, and it's the most important, most profitable vehicle ford makes. Last year ford threw away the old formula and created a new f-150 from the ground up. At the top is a new king ranch model lavishly outfitted in castano leather. At the bottom is a new v6 model available with an automatic or manual transmission. An inexpensive work truck model has been added as well. In between is the industry's widest variety of body configurations: three cab styles, three bed lengths, two bed styles, and a choice of v8 engines. The f-150 comes equipped with dual frontal airbags designed to deploy according to the severity of the crash and who or what is occupying the seat. The xl, stx, xlt, fx4, lariat, and king ranch each boast their own interior style and features. Engines, suspensions and cab configurations are designed to meet specific needs. Xl is readily identifiable by its black grille and fascia and 17-inch steel wheels, though it comes with chrome bumpers. Xl is available in regular cab or supercab (extended cab) styles. An f-150 xl 4. 2-liter v8 regular cab 2wd automatic short wheelbase retails for $21,455, but a v6 manual will lower that price to $19,610; a long-wheelbase 4x4 v8 automatic supercab is priced at $29,690. (manufacturer's suggested retail prices are subject to change and do not include the destination charge of $795.) stx is sportier than the xl, with a body-colored grille-surround for the black bar grille, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Stx comes in styleside (flat) and flareside (fendered) body styles, in regular cab or supercab, with either a 6. 5-foot or a 5. 5-foot cargo box. An audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-disc cd changer is optional. Stx starts at $22,285. xlt is the most popular model, nicer and better-equipped than xl though not as luxurious as lariat. It comes with a honeycomb grille that sets it apart from the other models. Xlt comes in regular cab, supercab or supercrew, with a choice of 5. 5-, 6. 5-, or 8-foot bed lengths, and styleside or flareside body styles. A premium cloth interior is standard on the bench seats or optional captain's chairs. The xlt instrument panel gets more flash than either the xl or stx dash. Supercab, as well as supercrew versions, get power windows for the rear doors. The xlt also features an overhead rail console system that the owner can tailor to his or her needs. Fog lamps come standard on 4x4 xlts. An xlt supercrew 4x4 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $35,275. fx4 is a special off-road model. The interior features chrome trim and markings, and a floor shifter. Fx4 is available in regular cab, supercab, and supercrew body styles, with either 5. 5-foot styleside or 6. 5-foot flareside or styleside bed designs (no 8-foot bed). The standard engine is the 5. 4-liter v8. The fx4 has its own instrument package as do the rest of the models, with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather are optional, and 18-inch cast aluminum wheels are standard. An f-150 fx4 supercrew retails for $34,605. lariat is the luxury model. It has its own grille design and comes standard with 18-inch wheels. Lariat features black-on-cream instruments, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power-adjustable floor pedals, an in-dash message center, and climate control. Heated power leather captain's chairs are optional. Lariat 2wd models are available in all three body styles, but 4x4 versions are only available with styleside fenders. An f-150 lariat supercrew 4x4 starts at $35,875. king ranch features rich castano leather designed to capture the spirit of the historic texas cattle ranch. It comes as a supercrew distinguished by with a color-coordinated grille, arizona beige running boards, and other special trim. Inside are power-adjustable and heated captain's chairs in front, a 60/40 split bench seat in back, and unique interior tri. walkaroundredesigned for 2004, the ford f-150 looks much more manly than the previous-generation models. Its tall shoulders, bold front end and crisp lines give it a more utilitarian look that leaves no doubt that this is a serious truck. It's at least as stylish as the much-heralded dodge ram, but is totally different. In fact, the f-150 has a unique look, no small feat when designing within the hard parameters imposed by a pickup. In short, we think the new f-150 is a great-looking truck. the f-150 has picked up styling cues from the handsome super duty pickups, including the sharp cut in the forward part of the door, allowing a clear view of the massive outside mirrors. A high beltline gives the truck visual strength and makes occupants feel more secure. The roofline is somewhat reminiscent of chopped-top custom street trucks. the whole nose is shaped more squarely than the previous generation, which featured more feminine, more car-like curves. The grilles are larger and bolder. The front fascia wraps around to the fenders for a precise, sophisticated appearance. The bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is chiseled, though it looks more slab-sided at the same time, a theme that carries through the tailgate, giving the f-150 an upscale, utilitarian look that's very appealing. the different trim levels are quite distinctive. Just one example: xlt and lariat have a honeycomb grille (black on xlt, brushed-nickel on lariat), while xl, stx, fx4, and king ranch use a bar-style grille. practical considerations are a big part of the design, and some of this can be easily seen. Every bed, no matter which length or style, is two inches taller than previous-generation's beds to give more margin when hauling larger cargoes. The supercab (extended cab) doors are larger than the vestigial doors on the standard cab. At the other end of the spectrum is the king ranch, which evokes images of montana and cowboys. Lariat comes with every known amenity. we found the xlt's front bench seats attractive, but they were flat and lacked support. The front bench is split three ways. They also looked great, trimmed in black leather with light gray stitching. Adjusting the power seats may be a little awkward for drivers with big arms because the clearance between the door armrest and the seat is a little tight; rake adjustment on the power driver's seat is manual, and raking it forward can be a bit awkward. The center console between the captain's chairs is deep and holds a lot of stuff and features a pair of big, solid cup holders. The floor shifter for the automatic works very well. the radio and hvac controls are plain but straightforward and easy to operate. Giant mirrors afford an excellent view rearward. 1999 ford f-250 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. In fact, the super duty f-series trucks ride on an entirely different platform from the regular f-150 and f-250 models. The new ford super duty f-250, which replaces the previous f-250hd, should not be confused with ford's lighter duty f-250, which shares the f-150's aerodynamic body and chassis. ford's new super duty f-250 boasts significant improvements its predecessor. A roomier, more comfortable interior makes long hauls more bearable. A better suspension, better brakes and a choice of more powerful engines make it a joy to drive. Greater capacities make all of the super duty f-series trucks able to carry heavier loads and pull heavier trailers. until recently, heavy-duty trucks--three-quarter- and one-ton models--were work vehicles. While many still haul hay, pull horse trailers, work construction sites and are modified for all sorts of duties, more and more heavy-duty trucks are used for recreation. Recognizing this, ford has redesigned its super duty trucks with a slew of thoughtful features to make them more enjoyable for ferrying families. But working stiffs haven't been forgotten. more than 44 different configurations are available and we checked out a fair sample of them when the super duty f-series line was launched. But we focused on a $27,045 super duty f-250 4x4 supercab 4-door in lariat trim with the optional $970 automatic transmission for a total of $28,015. the super duty f-250 competes with the other heavyweights from detroit: the dodge ram 2500 and chevrolet/gmc c/k 2500--which will soon be available as the all-new chevrolet silverado and gmc sierra. walkaroundthe most noticeable thing about the 1999 super duty f-250 is the new exterior styling. Some compare it to the big-rig look of the dodge ram. Traditionally, ford's super duty trucks shared a cab with the f-l50 models, but this new line breaks that heritage. While the smaller f-l50s have rounded edges, the super duty pickups look like heavy-duty truck. a dropped beltline gives the new f-250 a sense of openness and accessibility. It also makes it easier to climb in, a welcome feature when juggling tools, briefcases, or even toddlers. A distinctive dip along the front door side glass improves the driver's view of the exterior mirrors, a big help when towing a trailer or for seeing around cargo boxes or dump truck bodies. two new triton overhead-cam engines are available: a 5. 4-liter v8 is rated at 235 horsepower and 335 foot-pounds of torque, while a 6. 8-liter v10 is available rated at 275 horsepower and 410 foot-pounds of torque. Ford expects it to be rated at 275 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of torque. a five-speed manual transmission comes standard with the gasoline engines, while a new six-speed manual is standard with the powerstroke. The optional 4-speed automatic transmission has been improved. Manual locking hubs are still available for the 4x4s. many trucks these days are used for work and personal duty. Short-bed (6 3/4 feet) and long-bed (8 feet) versions are available. The wheelbase of regular cab trucks has been stretched 4 inches and the truck is 9 inches longer overall. F-250 super duty crew cab 4x4 in lariat trim with 172-inch wheelbase $28,970, with two-wheel drive $25,870. interiorford designers didn't just make this truck bigger and better. They made it smarter. New interior features include a fold-down armrest, a floor console that can accommodate a laptop, and a removable hanging bin for storage that can attach to the dash. Controls are big, easy to reach and manipulate and gauges are easy to read. The only exception is the instrument panel dimmer, which is a bit hard to reach. Two large cupholders are provided. The standard cigar lighter is augmented with a second auxiliary power outlet. passenger-side airbags offer a deactivation switch on regular cab and supercab models. Adjustable seatbelt anchors increase safety and comfort. this truck is much roomier than before. An additional l. 5 inches of seat travel is designed to accommodate a wider range of drivers. It almost felt like a big luxury car. We were impressed with the striking combination of crisp handling and compliant ride quality. The steering was precise. the new chassis is more rigid than the previous platform, which allowed ford engineers to redesign and retune the suspension geometry. Braking performance was impressive with smooth, undramatic stops. Rear abs, which modulates brake pressure when rear-wheel lockup is detected, is standard on xl and xlt. The rear seat cushion folds up and forward and the seatback folds down to create a steel flat loading surface, a perfect place to put tools and other heavy items that need to stay secure and out of the elements. the rear doors are 25 inches wide. They hinge on the rear pillars of the cab and swing out a full 90 degrees from the doorsill. This design eases the loading of gear and passengers and contributes to occupant safety with the combination of vertical beams and a cross brace where the front and rear doors meet. summaryit seems like the timing couldn't be better for a new line of super duty trucks. Nearly half of all vehicles sold last year were trucks and suvs. Ford says the market for trucks heavier than 8,500 pounds gvw has increased by about 80 percent in the past five years. we like the new styling. 2006 dodge dakota review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Dakota is the largest pickup in its class and the only mid-size truck available with a v8. Dodge claims its 7150-pound maximum towing capacity is by far the best in class. the dakota looks big. Completely redesigned for 2005, it's larger than before and looks almost as big and tough as the full-size dodge ram. Getting in is easy, and the redesigned interior is comfortable and convenient with controls that are easy to reach and operate. The club cab version of the dakota achieved a five-star safety rating in frontal and side-impact crash tests conducted by the federal government. for 2006, the rear doors on club cabs have been redesigned to open wider. Otherwise, changes between 2005 and 2006 are limited to packaging: a new sunroof and new sound systems are options for 2006 club cab models. An auxiliary audio jack has been added to allow playback from personal audio devices, such as an ipod. Sirius satellite radio now comes standard on 2006 laramie models. Dakota is available with a choice of v6 and v8 engines. Underway, the dakota is smooth and quiet. The optional 4. 7-liter v8 burbles subtly in the background when cruising, but really scoots when the throttle is mashed. Yet its fuel economy is rated within 1 mpg of the standard v6's. The steering is light for easy maneuverability in crowded parking lots and the dakota responds quickly on mountain roads and tracks nice and straight on the highway. lineupdodge dakota comes in two body styles: the club cab is an extended-cab version with small, reverse-opening rear doors to access the rear compartment and a 6 1/2-foot bed. Each can seat five to six passengers, but back-seat riders will be much more comfortable in the quad cab. Both bodies are built on the same 131. 1-inch wheelbase. three trim levels are available, st, slt, and laramie. the standard engine is a 3. 7-liter v6. It comes with a six-speed manual transmission. A 4. 7-liter v8 engine is available for all models 785-$860). A high-output version of the 4. 7-liter v8 is available for the slt and laramie. Side-curtain airbags for the front and rear seats are optional 495); we recommend them because they are designed provide head protection. Head restraints and shoulder belts are provided for all seat positions. A sunroof is available for the quad cab. An optional hands-free communications system that uses bluetooth technology integrates a compatible cellphone with the truck's audio system. option packages for 2006 include trx, trx4 off-road, r/t, and night runner. Each is available in the club cab or quad cab configuration. trx includes unique five-spoke/five-lug 16-inch aluminum wheels and goodyear wrangler off-road tires; tow hooks; a limited-slip differential; and trx decal on the cargo box. The trx package is available on 2wd st, slt and laramie. Trx4 off-road includes everything in the trx package plus painted shocks; an increased ride height of one inch; heavy-duty service package; skid plates; trx4 off-road cargo box decal; and slush mats. r/t is an slt with the high-output 4. 7-liter engine and: 17-inch five-spoke/five-lug chrome-clad aluminum wheels; hood scoop; sport appearance package (in red flame or black only); body color grille surround; chrome exhaust tip; cargo box decals; r/t identification on headrests and instrument cluster; and satin silver accents for the center stack and door remotes. night runner. walkaroundthe dodge dakota looks massive and menacing. The dakota retains its family resemblance to the dodge ram and durango, though it looks crisper and the grille is laid back, not vertical. Dakota's frame is shared in part with the durango suv. a coil-over-shock independent front suspension is used on both 2wd and 4wd models, with conventional leaf springs at the rear. All models come with front and rear tow hooks and tie-downs in the bed. interiorthe interior was redesigned for 2005 and continues with little change for 2006. Black-on-white gauges are outlined with chrome rings, and the central speedometer is about twice as large as the other two gauges. The angular center stack houses the sound system, climate controls and vents. The designers added in more brushed sheet metal accents around the cockpit, and the whole design works very well in terms of usability, convenience, and reach. The plastic materials look good but not great, and interior fits and finishes were good. the driver's seat looked good and felt good with its upper and lower support wings and good padding where it counts. Quad cab interiors are roomy. By making the dakota larger, dodge expanded the quad cab interior to nearly 56 cubic feet. The rear seats are deliberately stepped up on their bases so that rear-seat occupants can see out more easily, and they are split into 40/20/40 folding sections with two rear cupholders. Rear-seat room is generous for family use, with 33 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seat. A center console and lots of cubbyholes provide space to stash stuff. driving impressionwe found the dodge dakota surprisingly quiet, smooth and civil in its behavior, more like a car than a truck inside. Thick glass, big mufflers, and generous sound insulation throughout the body and firewall help reduce noise. the dakota drives bigger than it looks, with a hefty, ram-like way about it, a nicely muscular street swagger. the v8 is worth every penny. The v6 feels a bit light on power for this big, heavy pickup and it doesn't offer a big fuel economy advantage. the 3. 7-liter v6 is rated 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. The 4. 7-liter v8 generates 230 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. The 4. 7-liter high output v8 is rated 260 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, thanks to higher compression and more aggressive valve timing. A v6 4wd automatic is rated 15/19 mpg city/highway by the epa; a v8 4wd automatic rates 14/19. At highway speeds it settled down to a nice background burble in overdrive fifth gea.
