2002 dodge dakota review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Dodge strategically promotes the dakota as the biggest, most powerful, most capable compact pickup on the market. Or as shakespeare might have put it: a dakota by any other name would be precisely the same size. While some competitive extended cabs feature short auxiliary doors behind the main doors, the dakota club cab comes with two doors only.  regular and club cabs are offered in three trim levels: base, sport and slt. Base regular cab 2wd retails for $14,810; sport regular cab 2wd goes for $15,855; and slt regular cab sells for $16,415. Sport adds better seats and interior trim and upgrades to the exterior. Slt comes with v6 power, gray fascias, and bright bumpers and grille. Quad cabs start at the sport level, powered by the v6.  the new sxt model, available only with a regular or club cab, adds 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear stabilizer bar, cloth bucket seats, carpeting, and special graphite metallic exterior trim. A 120-horsepower, 2. 5-liter inline-4 is standard on regular and club cabs in base or sport trim. Slt's and all quad cabs come with a 175-horsepower 3. 9-liter v6. Rounding out the option list are a 235-horsepower 4. 7-liter v8, and a 5. 9-liter v8 that produces 245 or 250 horsepower, depending on model. Manual transmissions are offered with all but the 5. 9. The other is a full-time system that emphasizes all-weather traction.  the r/t group adds $2,190 to the cost of a regular or club cab, and features a high-performance version of the 5. 9-liter v8. R/t's also pack aggressive (255/55r17) blackwall tires on 17-inch aluminum wheels, heavy-duty stabilizer bars, a lowered (by one inch) handling-oriented suspension, limited-slip rear differential, bucket seats, a floor console, fog lights, special trim and a long list of convenience items. walkarounddakota shares its freightliner styling with the full-size dodge ram. Bold lines give it a big, burly look, like it's ready to take on anything that comes its way.  regular and club cabs have a 6-foot 6-inch bed, a good size for a compact truck. The quad cab, on the other hand, has a 5-foot 3-inch bed. According to dodge, people seldom need the full length of the longer bed. Those who need more cargo space can consider an optional bed extender, an aluminum cage that flips over the lowered tailgate to extend the bed by 18 inches. Sometimes the bed extender works great, but a lowered tailgate with a mesh opening won't hold dirt back like longer bed with a solid tailgate. The instrument panel was made easier to reach and easier to use, and almost all of the switchgear was changed. A notable example is the rotary dial for the electrically controlled transfer case, replacing the lever used previously. Door trim and carpeting were updated, as were the center and overhead consoles. Leather became an option on quad cabs, where it costs an extra $580 in 2002. A three-channel home security transceiver joins the option list.  visibility from inside the dakota quad cab is outstanding. The driver sits high and there are no obvious blind spots. Optional 6x9-inch mirrors improve visibility rearward. The quad cab is roomy and comfortable. The wide console works well as a storage area for miscellaneous junk, but it gets in the way when fastening seat belts. A pullout cup holder at the foot of the center section is a nice touch. The driver and front seat passenger had tons of legroom.  the rear doors open wide - about 37 inches. Getting in and out of the rear seat is aided by the fact that there is no cutout for the rear wheels (like there is in many sport-utilities). But a lack of clearance for heads and feet make getting out a bit more difficult than it should be.  the rear seating area in the dakota quad cab is roomier than that of any other compact truck. But that only makes it the best of a bad lot, and legroom, particularly, is limited. There's good knee room, and plenty of headroom, but not a lot of foot space, so don't plan on stretching out. As in most of the smaller ``crew cab' pickups, the rear seat back is bolt upright and not very comfortable. Children and smaller adults should be happy enough back there, but taller folk will find the space confining. It also featured a trip computer and odometer that reports fuel economy and fuel tank range. We hit one particularly sandy section and switched easily into 4wd without dropping speed. Later, on a steep hill, we switched into 4wd-low and easily walked up a good 15 degree grade.  only on washboard stretches of hard-packed dirt roads did the back end tend to lose its grip at speed - and even then only in two-wheel-drive mode. That's a fault common to most unloaded pickups. We were impressed with the quad cab's turning radius. For a truck its length, it makes relatively tight turns.  the brakes deliver straight and true stopping power. This transmission was designed in tandem with the 4. 7-liter engine and they are precisely calibrated to each other, with an onboard computer continuously adjusting the shift pattern to match the way the truck is driven. A 3. 0:1 low ratio provides plenty of leverage to get rolling, followed by a shift up into a torquy 1. 67:1 second. But a kickdown from direct-drive third engages a higher-speed second ratio of 1. 50:1, which dodge says is better for passing. Along with the hauling capability of the bed, it's almost like having two vehicles in one.  if yo. Anti-lock Brakes✔ Bucket Seats✔ AM/FM✔ Aluminum Wheels✔ Alloy Wheels

2005 chevrolet cobalt review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. This is chevrolet's attempt to offer the kind of equipment, power, value and price that competes directly against the honda civic, toyota corolla, and ford focus.  chevrolet says the cobalt is the quietest, stiffest, strongest, most refined small car it has ever built, and after a test drive, we give them high marks on almost all counts. Cobalt features an expressive design and a dynamic driving experience. The base car comes with disc/drum brakes, and the others come with disc/disc brakes with abs. The sport package 595) includes a brushed metal trim package for the dashboard, white-faced gauges, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, rear spoiler and 16-inch alloy wheels with pirelli tires.  safety features include dual-stage front air bags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, rear center shoulder belts, and the latch child seat retention system. All but base models come with abs. Other safety features cost extra. Head curtain side air bags 395) designed to provide head protection are optional. And the opel astra in europe. But with its single-bar grille and bowtie emblem, it looks like a proper chevrolet small car right down to its shoes and socks.  there are huge plastic bumper fascias on both ends of the car and the body panel fits are extremely tight. So tight, in fact, that there are no rubber trim gaskets around the compound complex headlamps.  the coupe bears a stronger resemblance in its shape to the cavalier than the sedan, which has a new and more modern roofline sweep. The base, ls and lt coupe and sedan models have no spoiler as standard (it's optional), and the ss coupe version carries a huge, tall rear spoiler than certainly makes a design and intent statement.  cobalt is heavier, longer, wider and lower than most of its direct competitors, its engine is the most powerful base engine in the class, and its interior dimensions and trunk capacity are close to the competition in every respect. After 10 years and 6 million cavaliers, chevrolet has learned a few lessons, and that's apparent in the size, shape and equipment of the cobalt. interiorinside the cobalt, the design theme is simple and straightforward, but far from the el cheapo appointments of the old cavalier. There's just enough chrome trim here and there on knobs and instruments to brighten things up without a lot of glare from the shiny parts. Instruments are large, well placed, and easy to read, with nice graphic treatment throughout.  cobalt is unique in the subcompact class in that three completely different seats are offered in base, ls and lt, and ss versions, each with detail changes in foam, padding and trim. There was plenty of fore/aft and rake adjustment for a 6-foot, 4-inch driver, plus seat height adjustment with a ratcheting handle. It raises and stays in position by itself.) the trunk is wide and deep with a low liftover height, and almost 14 cubic feet of capacity, more than competitive in the class. In addition, there's a 60/40-split, fold-down rear seat with a trunk pass-through feature. driving impressionwe found the cobalt quite pleasant to drive, and almost eerily quiet for a car that costs well under $20,000. Chevrolet has put what feels like hundreds of dollars worth of special door seals, sandwich steel panels, thick carpets and pads, noise blockers and noise absorbers throughout the front, middle and rear of the car, and normal front-seat conversation is possible at speeds over 90 mph.  the cobalt lt is not the address of driving excitement, however. We think it's a handsome, well-equipped car. The standard engine could offer more responsive low-end power, however. model lineupchevrolet cobalt coupe or sedan 13,625); ls 15,920); lt 18,195); ss 21,430). assembled inlordstown, ohio. options as testedcurtain air bags 395); onstar 695); xm satellite radio 325); rear spoiler 275), cigarette lighter 15). model testedchevrolet cobalt lt sedan 18,195). 2002 toyota sienna review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It's roomy and comfortable in all seating positions, with enough space for a family with several children. All are the same length, and all come with dual sliding rear doors. Power rear doors are optional, however. Dual sliding doors are a $795 option.  of the three trim levels, the ce is basic: cruise control, and power windows, locks and mirrors are all optional.  mid-line le comes with all the popular features. It comes standard with dual-temperature air conditioning with separate controls for the rear, power windows, locks and mirrors, cruise control, privacy glass and better quality cloth. The xle upgrade package #1 1,690) provides leather trim, second-row captains chairs, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, six-way power driver's seat and a premium audio system with radio, cassette, and cd changer and eight jbl speakers. The package is $757, the same price as last year when it didn't include the roof rack and keyless entry. walkaroundwith its clean, conventional looks, the toyota sienna is a classic minivan with subtle touches of sport-utility styling. The long, sloping nose is unmistakably minivan, but square lines elsewhere, particularly when viewed from the rear, recall a sport-utility vehicle. Where many minivans display vast sweeps of metal, the sienna has a relatively even proportion of glass to metal, another suv characteristic.  sienna is built on a stretched version of the toyota camry platform. It is built on the same georgetown, kentucky, assembly line as the camry. Basing the sienna on the camry results in nice road manners. These savings allow toyota to bring the price of the sienna closer to the norm for the class.  sitting in the driveway, the sienna looks neat and compact. Its just-right size fits in between the chrysler town & country and voyager. The sienna is 6 inches narrower inside than the chrysler minivans. interiorthe toyota sienna is roomy, despite its moderate length. Three-row seating is standard, and the rear cargo area is an accommodating 18 inches deep from hatch opening to seatback. The seats can be removed with the seat backs folded flat, which make them easier to handle. The seat latches are superbly executed; they release easily and are simple to re-install.  getting in and out of the sienna is easy. Dual sliding doors are now standard and ensure passengers get in and out in a hurry and minimize running around to the far side of the vehicle to grab a kid. Child-safety door locks defeat the inside door handles on all sliding doors. At the full-open position, an interlock stopper prevents sliding doors from sliding closed when parked on a downhill grade. A half-door stopper prevents the left-side sliding door from fully opening when the fuel lid is opened to prevent the door from making contact with the fueling area.  the optional right-side power sliding door can be opened by pressing buttons on the dash, keyless remote or b-pillar, or by pulling on the inside or outside latches. A switch next to the steering wheel allows the driver to override these buttons so that the power sliding door cannot be opened. The power sliding door feature works without having the key in the ignition. The power sliding door can be opened like a normal door when the power switch is turned off. The power sliding door senses when an obstacle is in its path and automatically retracts.  step-in height is much lower than that of an suv, making getting in and out much easier for shorter people, older people and everyone else. Once in, the driver enjoys an expansive view of the road, though the seating position is not as high as in many sport-utility vehicles. Visibility is excellent in all directions, thanks to all the glass. Big mirrors (power on le and xle models) offer a good view to the rear. Instruments are big, bright and easy to read.  all seating positions are very comfortable. Optional leather upholstery is attractive, luxurious and easy to clean. The rear two rows of seats provide enough room to comfortably seat six people, though they don't offer as much room as the bigger honda odyssey, dodge grand caravan or chrysler town & country. Little nets attached to the sides of the front seats are great for storing toll tickets, sunglasses or wallets. Fold-down cupholders next to the storage net secure drinks but flip up out of the way when not in use; they don't look like they'd hold tall drinks well, but securely held my venti-sized paper cappuccino cup.  the second row can be equipped with either captain's chairs or a two-place bench seat. The seatbacks fold down to provide a flat surface for food and games and cupholders. Molded into the doors are round holders suitable for one-liter bottles. Cupholders, up to 14 of them, are everywhere. The steering isn't as sharp, and the transient response isn't as crisp as some of the other minivans; it leans in the corners, and seems a bit mushy in transient maneuvers. But overall, the sienna handles well and its soft suspension makes up for any handling deficiencies with its smooth ride quality and solid stability at high speeds.  toyota's v6 is easy to live with. It's smooth, reliable, and economical. Power isn't an issue. It generates 210 horsepower, slightly more than the ford windstar's 3. 8-liter v6 and on par with the chrysler voyager's 3. 3-liter v6. Passing other vehicles on hills is easy: punch it and the sienna takes off, quickly putting slower vehicles away. Toyota recommends premium fuel. It always chooses the right gear, forming a team with the v6. It's smooth and comfortable. Loading passengers and cargo is easy and convenient, aided by optional power sliding doors.  the sienna may lack a few features that can be found on some of its competitors, such as the rear audio jacks on the. 1996 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The luxury hot rod of sport-utilities. introductionthe grand cherokee is the flagship of jeep's sport-utility family, and, in some respects, remains ahead of the ever-growing and ever-improving compact-class pack.  when chrysler introduced the grand cherokee in 1992 sport-utility sales already were booming, with jeep cherokee enjoying year-over-year sales gains for more than a decade. The idea was to take the cherokee concept a step up the aspirational ladder, combining rugged jeep attributes with the luxury, comfort and performance associated with expensive cars.  the combination has proved to be a winning one. Over a quarter-million grand cherokees rolled out of jeep-eagle dealerships last year, a total that was second only to ford's phenomenal explorer among all sport-utility vehicles. Obviously, the folks at jeep have been doing something right.  for 1996, the grand cherokee receives a number of significant detail changes. Most notably, the interior underwent a makeover, which included installation of dual airbags and more luxury options. Grand cherokee, however, has maintained the angular lines and boxy shape even through its latest restyling.  and it works. The distinctive, rugged jeep look, with its vertical grille and side-body cladding, still stands out from the competition.  the grand cherokee comes in three models: base, laredo and the top-of-the-line grand cherokee limited. Laredo and limited are both available with one of two 4wd systems--selec-trac, which can be used as a part-time system, or the more sophisticated quadra-trac, which operates continuously.  selec-trac is standard equipment on laredos equipped with 6-cyl. Engines and automatic transmissions. Grand cherokee limited models with 6-cyl. Engines come with the quadra-trac system. Quadra-trac is optional on v8-powered grand cherokees, and both models can also be ordered with rear-drive only, $24,603 for the basic laredo, $30,479 for the limited.  in contrast to the explorer and blazer/jimmy, there's no 2-door version of the grand cherokee. It's also smaller and generally lighter than its key rivals--particularly the explorer--riding a shorter wheelbase.  however, at 70. 9 in., the grand cherokee is the widest of the bunch, and in 4x4 trim it also provides the most ground clearance--8. 3 in. Good ground clearance is one of the keys to successful off-road performance, and off-road usefulness is a core value at jeep. interiorthe grand cherokee technically seats five. Indeed, three adults can wedge their way into the rear seat. But we found a long ride with two children and one adult in the back was cramped.  the front seats are buckets; the rear is a 60/40 split bench that flops forward to expand cargo volume. Pronounced thigh and torso bolsters give these seats a pleasantly snug feel, and provide good lateral support to keep the driver centered when the vehicle is bounding about in the backwoods.  all of the elements of any luxury sport-utility--or car, for that matter--are here. They include wood trim, automatic climate control, premium audio system, power windows, power mirrors, remote keyless entry and power-adjustable seats, to name only a few. There's less cargo capacity here than in the explorer and blazer/jimmy. The spare tire, stowed on the side of the rear storage compartment, cuts into the cargo space. The grand cherokee's key competitors have moved spare tire stowage underneath, operating on the theory that tire changes will be extremely rare since so few 4-door sport-utilities ever venture into off-road regions filled with sharp rocks and the like.  the grand cherokee's one-piece rear liftgate provides a wide opening for cargo loading, but is difficult for short folks to reach and close. Engine, which was re-engineered to reduce noise in the grand cherokee's 1996 makeover. The inline six has more power than the base engines in competing import sport-utilities, as well as the ford explorer base v6, and like all inline 6-cyl. Engines it's smooth.  but it's the v8 that really gives this vehicle its lively personality.  although there's now a v8 engine option for the ford explorer, the grand cherokee v8 still provides the best performance in the compact sport-utility class, as well as the best towing capability--as much as 6500 lbs. With the optional trailer towing package, which costs $359 on 6-cyl. Models, $242 with the v8.  the upper towing limit for the 6-cyl. Epa fuel economy ratings slide to 14 mpg city, 18 highway with the 5. 2-liter engine, compared to 15/20 for the 4. 0-liter 6-cyl.  however, we found it hard to worry about mpg when the v8 was whisking us down the freeway, or making short work of passing on country back roads. The v8 provided exceptional acceleration--by sport-utiity standards--from a dead stop and emitted a delightful low, throaty rumble from under the hood. Otherwise, the ride is quiet. We also detected slight body roll on wide sweeping curves at highway speeds, although this is common to almost all sport-utility vehicles.  braking was good, with 4-wheel disc brakes and anti-lock brakes as standard equipment.  in addition to its robust v8 power, we were also favorably impressed by the grand cherokee's ride quality on paved roads. With springs and shock absorbers tailored to dual demands, there's some stiffness, but this vehicle is less truck-like than many of its competitors.  naturally, the grand cherokee feels right at home on dirt roads, or no roads at all. In addition, it is equipped with good safety features, outstanding luxury amenities and the sophisticated quadra-trac option, all of which makes it a standout in a field filled with steadily improving choices.  with v8 power, it's the top performer in its class. Add distinctive styling, and it's easy to see why this vehicle remains a best-seller. assembled indetroit, mi. options as testedv8 engine, quadra-trac 4wd, automatic climate control, premium am/fm/cd/cassette sound system, power-adjustable heated leather seats, color-keyed body cladding, overhead console with compass, trip computer. model testedgrand cherokee limited v8. 1994 ford club wagon review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. introductionconversion shops are accustomed to the sight of a big ford club wagon rolling through the doorway. It's a thoroughbred van that has all the basics and design integrity suited for the customer's creative juices.  still, it says lots about a vehicle's character when that same full-size van, carrying a factory-installed package, can win over the showroom customer. And that will happen plenty with the 1994 ford club wagon chateau, a seven-passenger blend of comfort, convenience and sheer drivability.  this is a full-sizer that threatens to make enthusiasts permanently swear off even the sweetest of minivans, all because of one glorious element: space.  ford uses it brilliantly on the chateau, making sure that this van brings a surplus of comfortable seating and ultra-visible glass to a sound overall package. Performance is more than adequate and compensates for a look that's, by and large, no-frills. A particularly smart touch is the chrome-topped, wraparound front bumper that's surrounded by a standard ensemble of plastic grille, bold headlights, turn signals and hazard lights. Another highlight: recessed door handles that were flush to the vehicle, clean and aerodynamic. We opened the large plastic door and all sorts of handy shelving appeared in tandem with the glove compartment. Included was a storage rack for cds, and beneath it another well placed corn compartment for everything else. A tray that could accommodate two cups pulled out and became part of an overall platform of about 8 by 12 inches - just right for holding books or maps.  other pluses: a power unit for a personal cd player or a game boy built into the armrest of the driver-side backseat captain's chair; a fold-down rear seat that could sleep an average-sized adult; an independent fan for rear temperature control; six ceiling vents for maximum circulation; map lights; cupholders; three sets of dome lights and a utility rack. driving impressionwith the club wagon chateau, the delivery-van comparisons only apply to its shape and size. Because the acceleration was steady but not at all spectacular, we think the available 7. 5-liter v8 would be a wise alternative for the chateau. On the expressway, passing was breezy and, blessedly, quiet-even as we drove by 18-wheelers.  ride and suspension were reassuring, although all it took was a wintertime drive on icy roads to remind us that vans aren't ideal snow-and-ice machines. There just wasn't enough weight on those rear wheels. But that was a minor van complaint compared with the exceptional comfort this ride offered. There was no bounce, no jarring, no boat-over-the-waves effect that too many vans historically have produced. There was no reaching for a button on the dash, and no concern that overdrive would need to be monitored if we were towing a boat or trailer-it was defeated at about the 60-mph mark. All in all, an appreciated engineering touch.  steering and maneuverability were a cinch with the club wagon chateau, crisper, even, than on many cars. Rather, it's a new version of an old van concept, one that puts a premium on fundamental big-van tenets: a bruising engine to get the job done; a smooth, comfortable ride made nicer by smart use of ample room; and spectacular all-over visibility, enhanced by this vehicle's high-in-the-saddle ride.  it's a nice reminder that, vehicularly speaking, an american tradition thrives. 1997 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Athletic luxury. introductionone of the most recognized brand names in the world, jeep comes in three flavors--the classic wrangler, the cherokee and the grand cherokee, luxury version of the jeep brand and the most popular member of its tribe. The grand cherokee outsells all sport-utilities but the ford explorer in the u. Market--about 280,000 sales in 1996, a healthy 12% increase over 1995.  the grand cherokee itself comes in several interesting levels--laredo, limited and the orvis edition, named for the outdoor gear company and similar in character to the explorer eddie bauer models. It builds from there to the 5. 2-liter v8 limited and orvis models. These include selec-trac, with a fixed torque split between front and rear, and quadra-trac, which normally puts all the torque to the rear axle but can automatically vary torque fore and aft at any proportion between zero and 100%, assuring that the power always goes to the tires that have the traction.  and, for those who want the power and the space without the complexity of a heavy 4wd system, in 1997 the basic 2wd model is available for the first time with the 5. 2-liter v8 engine option.  the grand cherokee limited comes with a large load of standard equipment--as well it should for a starting price of $31,885--including air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power mirrors, power locks, 10-way power seats with power recline and lumbar systems, tinted glass, a remote locking/security system, leather trim, tilt steering, cruise control, aluminum wheels, premium am/fm/cassette audio, fog lamps, a roof rack, and a pair of consoles, one overhead, one between the front seats.  the limited package 1290) adds heated seats, a power sunroof, and an upgraded sound system with three-band graphic equalizer. The typical jeep white-on-black instruments, with color accents, are easy to scan and very good at night.  the leather seats are very comfortable for long rides, and have a wide range of power adjustments, with a two-driver memory feature for the seats, radio stations and mirrors. We wouldn't stretch it to five adults, at least not for any long rides. The interior simply isn't roomy enough for five real people.  but the ride is quiet and comfortable, more comfortable than any other jeep, as well as most of its competitors. Of torque for hauling up to 5000 pounds of trailer, with an improvement in mpg rating from 13/17 city/highway for the v8 to 15/20 for the six, quite a lot in percentage terms.  we have been off-road many times with the 4. 0 in the grand and other jeep models, and it never let us down.  while the shift is on to rack-and-pinion steering in the sport-utility world, the grand cherokee still uses recirculating-ball steering, and it is a bit mushy and indefinite compared to other systems, though entirely acceptable. It works with leading-arm coil-spring front suspension and trailing arm coil-spring rear suspension and gas shocks all around to keep the grand cherokee on the straight and narrow.  ride quality is very good, all things considered, and ride control is taut, with not too much body roll in fast corners. When it comes to all-around handling, the grand cherokee is one of the most nimble performers in its class.  we noticed while underway that the big outside mirrors and windshield pillars seem to generate quite a bit of wind noise at freeway speeds, which was doubly intrusive because the powertrain noise and chassis noise were both so well subdued by tuning and isolation. We thought at first we hadn't closed the left front door all the way, but the noise persisted at speeds above 50 mph. summarywhile the ford explorer continues to rule the sport-utility realm, the jeep grand cherokee is still solidly in second place, in spite of being one of the oldest entries in its class.  and while the preponderance of grand cherokees sold are laredo and limited six-cylinder models, there is still plenty of room in the market for the ultimate jeep. At more than $37,000 it's well into the luxury realm, but it's got style, power, plenty of equipment and very serious off-road capability for those who shun the beaten track. assembled indetroit, mi. options as testedv8 engine, heated seats, power sunroof, upgraded audio, up country suspension, skid plates, tow hooks, 3. 73:1 rear axle, gas shocks, locking rear differential. model testedlimited. 1998 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Big, handsome and hard to get. introductionford has touted itself as the 'better idea' company in years past. Its biggest better idea to date, the massive expedition, may well be considered a best idea, judging from the horde of cash-in-hand customers queuing up at ford dealerships. Those wishing to purchase a navigator should expect to wait for awhile to get one.  why is the expedition so successful? We think its success goes beyond the current enthusiasm for large sport-utilities. And we think it goes beyond the shortage of contenders; only the gmc and chevrolet suburbans compete in this big size class. We think the expedition is selling like hot cakes because it does everything it was designed to do and it does it well. Its good looks certainly don't hurt, either.  this year does not bring major changes to the expedition because it is only in its second year of production. And the folks at ford wouldn't want to change a thing. In fact, the only things setting the 1998 version apart from its predecessor are the availability of some additional paint colors. The expedition has also been certified as a low-emissions vehicle in states that have adopted california's tougher emissions regulations. walkaroundthe stylists at ford took a sensible approach when they set out to give shape to the expedition. They already had two winners to their credit--the f-150 pickup and the explorer. So they borrowed the best elements from each to create another success. From nose to windshield, the expedition shares sheet metal with the f-150. No panels interchange between expedition and explorer, but the resemblance is unmistakable.  this combination of ingredients works well. The expedition is handsome, with a sloping hoodline and rounded front end that reflect attention paid to aerodynamic design. It's a design that pays off with improved fuel efficiency and reduced wind noise. As a matter of necessity, the sides and back are shaped more for utility than style. Clever use of trim and rounded corners provides some visual definition, however.  stretching more than 17 feet from nose to tail, the expedition is certainly no compact. And there's no way to disguise that. Gm's suburban is even longer, adding a foot-and-a-half to the total. With little demand for plain, entry-level vehicle in this class, ford equips the xlt well and the eddie bauer even better. Differences between xlt and eddie bauer are confined to paint and trim. Two seating configurations are available. Ordered with front bucket seats and a center bench, the expedition can comfortably haul five passengers. Ordered with the front full-width seat and center bench makes room for six passengers. Well-padded chairs provide comfortable seating.  adding the optional third-row bench provides seating for two more passengers--three if they are small. First- and second-row occupants get separate heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls; a third set of controls for the third seat is optional.  a curved dashboard houses instruments and controls where they can easily be reached. The eddie bauer roof console adds a digital display that provides the date and time, average fuel economy, compass headings, along with a switch for the power swing-out rear quarter windows.  attractive and durable materials are used throughout the expedition's cabin. Soft-touch coverings are applied to switches and door panels. Surprisingly, its bulk doesn't make it especially difficult to drive. Speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering works in the driver's favor by keeping steering effort down to a reasonable level. Brake pedal feel is light, yet precise. Lots of large windows, along with big mirrors, make it easy to see in all directions. Extra care and attention is required when maneuvering in close-quarters, however.  the ride quality is good, though it is not as soft as that of a traditional family sedan or wagon. An advantage of the expedition's long wheelbase is a resistance to pitching over freeway expansion joints and other irregularities. Built into the system is a one-inch increase in ride height. While serious rock-climbing is not suggested, occasional forays off the beaten path can be undertaken without fear of being left stranded. They are identical save for displacement. They are smooth and quiet. We recommend the larger unit, which delivers extra pulling power for full passenger loads and heavy trailers. Its blend of strength, refinement, comfort, good road manners and exceptional finish quality is not matched by the suburban, at least for now. The expedition will haul almost anything one might put in a pickup truck, assuming the owner is willing to soil the plush carpet. It will carry a large family in limousine-like splendor, pull a trailer or explore places beyond pavement's end. Power Windows✔ Bucket Seats✔ Air Conditioning✔ Alloy Wheels

2000 hyundai elantra wagon review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. More features for the dollar. introductionif the elantra proves anything, it's this: hyundai is serious about catching, then keeping, a new generation of owners.  catching customers starts with a solid, well-equipped subcompact at one basic price. And the elantra's list of standard features is anything but bare-bones basic. Keeping customers is left to a surprisingly complete warranty. The hyundai advantage extends bumper-to-bumper coverage to five years or 60,000 miles, while the powertrain is warranted for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Elantra gls includes popular features such as air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and door locks, thick cut-pile carpeting, a tachometer and six-way adjustable driver's seat. Better still, hyundai is providing more stuff for the same price as a 1999 elantra gls. Its rounded fenders, sloping hood and large greenhouse afford good outward visibility in all directions, and the optional rear spoiler indeed adds a hint of sportiness. The restyled front end features improved halogen headlights that spill more lumens onto the road ahead.  the elantra's doors open wide for easy access to both front and rear seats, and its trunk provides 11 cubic feet of cargo space--above average in this class. Unfortunately, the trunk opening is rather small, making it difficult to load larger items that should easily fit. interiorhyundai's effort to project a higher level of quality is apparent in elantra's passenger cabin. The improvement isn't measured by bells and whistles, but by clean, efficient design, better finish and switches that are easier to live with.  the cloth upholstery and door trim feel sturdy, yet comfortable, and the vinyl, particularly that covering the dashboard, is soft and pliable. In all, materials feel quite rich for a car of elantra's price. Interior volume, including available headroom, compares favorably with other cars in the class.  remote trunk and fuel release and a carpeted cargo compartment are standard.  the heater, ventilation and air conditioning are now controlled with rotary switches, rather than the sliding type. They're much easier to locate and adjust while driving. The elantra is a small sedan that will carry two adults and two or three children to work, the grocery store or a pta meeting comfortably, economically and free of worry.  its engine performs better than many in this class. It can get a bit raucous when run at high revs for an extended stretch. Everywhere but up the steepest grades, the elantra held its own, and even in the mountains it had no trouble keeping with the flow of traffic. As is often the case with small cars, we recommend the manual transmission when performance is a priority. Yet even with the automatic, elantra is up to the work-a-day grind of commuting and running errands. Plenty of cars that cost $10,000 more than elantra don't have multi-link rear suspension, or speed-sensitive power steering. The steering assist gives the wheel a light touch at low speed, for easy parallel parking, yet it's not overly sensitive at highway speed. Feedback through the steering wheel gives the driver a pretty good idea of how well the front tires are gripping.  in general, elantra's ride is compliant and well controlled, and it handles twisting mountain roads in fine fashion. Only on the most uneven stretches of freeway, where joints and undulations can get the suspension hopping does the elantra get bouncy. With truly aggressive stops, we were able to heat elantra's brakes to a point where they began to fade. As noted, the engine can get loud when run wide-open. Yet overall, elantra is smoother and quieter than its predecessors had taught us to expect. Hyundai's efforts to dampen shakes and limit cabin noise have paid dividends. summaryadded features without added markup make the 2000 elantra a more formidable competitor for the dodge neon, honda civic and other small cars. Elantra isn't the most refined car in its class, but it's a long way from the least refined. Tachometer✔ Power Windows✔ Air Conditioning✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Alloy Wheels
