2001 dodge ram 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A heavy-duty full-size with everyday comfort. introductionthough it's now the oldest design among current full-size pickups, the dodge ram may still be the best-looking truck on the market. Clearly, it's the most stylish.  it drives and rides well with quick steering and excellent brakes. Five engines are offered: 3. 9-liter v6, 5. 2-liter v8, 5. 9-liter v8, 8. 0-liter v10 and two cummins 5. 9-liter diesel inline-6 choices. Every engine comes with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Short and long beds are available.  the 5. 2-liter v8 produces 230 horsepower, while the 5. 9-liter v8 generates 245 horsepower and an impressive 335 pounds-feet of torque. The basic cummins diesel produces 235 horsepower and 460 pounds-feet of torque, while the new-for-2001 high-output version cranks out 245 horsepower and a stump-pulling 505 pounds-feet of torque.  standard, club cab and quad cab bodies are available in lt, laramie slt, and sst trim levels. The bold design with broad-shouldered front fenders is reminiscent of big freightliners steaming down the road with a full load of logs. It remains the best-looking pickup on the market. To improve structural rigidity, dodge designed a beam that runs laterally under the truck, and reinforced both the a and c pillars. Side door guard beams were also added to improve protection from side impacts.  the optional sport package comes with a body-colored grille and front and rear bumpers, decals, fog lamps, outline white letter tires, and cast aluminum wheels. The absence of a b-pillar makes it much easier to get in or out of the rear seat; it also makes it much easier to stick something behind the front seats. This includes a new steering wheel design, a big storage compartment, an extra power point, and new cupholders designed to handle any commercially available drink container. Other recent improvements include a keyless remote entry system, an upgraded base sound system, a cassette and cd sound system option and a new center console. The instrument pod features vacuum-fluorescent odometer and trip odometer that are tamperproof, and there are driver-programmable keyless entry key fobs. Other interior features include heated power mirrors, illuminated power door locks and window switches, and an optional security alarm system.  the front seat in all rams is divided 40/20/40, with a huge fold-down center section that doubles as armrest and writing table. When no one is sitting in it, the center position provides a large storage box, with divided spaces for coins, cassettes, maps or a laptop computer. The front seat belts are integrated into the seats themselves, which gets rid of messy hanging belts -- a particularly nice improvement for the wide-open quad cab doorway.  the quad cab rear seat is the same one used in other extended cab versions. It's handy for children, pets and petite adults, but it is not very comfortable for adults on long trips. The bench portion of the seat flips up out of the way effortlessly from either side for hauling tools or cargo. The power window option comes with an express-down switch on the driver's side. Steering wheel mounted radio controls are optional. There are two new overhead console designs; one with and one without trip computer. This engine has a ton of torque and a broad power band, which makes it a great deal of fun to drive. Passing is effortless. The manual transmission can add flexibility in off-road situations, but we recommend the automatic for street use. Rear suspension is a conventional live axle with leaf springs designed to carry heavy loads. The dodge v8 pickup truck has for years had a special kind of presence on the street, and the ram backs up that presence with excellent street manners and ride.  steering revisions that were new last year make steering much more precise than earlier models. Steering in the earlier rams was light and quick, but had a lot of dead space on-center and seemed to require constant left-right adjustments.  braking, with discs in front, drums in rear, is exemplary. The ram stops quickly with superb straight-line stability. Recent improvements to the instrumentation, powertrain and body combinations have made it an all-around better truck.

1999 dodge durango review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Big, bold and just right. introductionwe could not have attracted more attention if we'd been in a $100,000 mercedes-benz. The well-dressed group was shivering in the damp washington weather, waiting at the valet booth after seeing a musical at the kennedy center. Its big ram grille and broad freightliner fenders loomed out of the darkness and into the flood lights accompanied by the burbling v8. We had to smile at the soft 'wows' and 'ohs' from the upscale crowd as we tipped the attendant, climbed in and drove away.  with its big-rig look, the durango always looks ready, whether it's heading down a primitive road or parked at the shopping center. Based on the dodge dakota pickup, the durango is bigger than the ford explorer, but not as big as the ford expedition or chevy tahoe. That's a bit more robust than the expedition's optional 5. 4-liter v8 (230 horsepower, 325 pound-feet of torque) and compares favorably to the tahoe's 5. 7-liter v8 (255 horsepower, and 330 pound-feet of torque). Fuel economy for the 5. 9-liter dodge v8 is rated at 12/16 mpg city/highway verses 13/17 for the 5. 2-liter dodge v8, and adds $595 to the price. The 3. 9-liter v6 is rated at 175 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque.  the durango should make a better tow vehicle than an explorer. With the 5. 9-liter engine and 3. 92 differential, it's capable of pulling a trailer of up to 7,200 pounds. Chevy's tahoe is rated to pull 7,000 pounds and ford's expedition is rated for 8,000 pounds.  two-wheel-drive versions have been added for 1999. It's a good setup for people who live in a dry climate, but want to be able to shift into ultimate off-road mode. It comes with everything above plus a planetary center differential. Shifting to full-time mode allows the front and rear axles to turn at different speeds, so the wheels don't fight each other in tight quarters yet traction is assured under all but the worst conditions. The back half of the roof is raised nearly 2 inches to increase rear-seat headroom and visibility. Viewed from outside the vehicle, the raised portion is cleverly disguised with a roof rack.  second-row seats are quite comfortable, offering plenty of headroom and adequate legroom. Stable cupholders and rear heating/air conditioning controls add to comfort.  third-row seats are surprisingly comfortable for two people, who achieve adequate legroom by tucking their feet under the second row of seats. Getting in and out of that third row is easy: flip a lever and the second-row seatback folds forward, then tumbles out of the way allowing a quick entry or exit. It's one of the best third-row seating designs on the market.  when it's time to haul cargo, the tailgate lifts up and out of the way and the two rows of seats are easily folded down to provide a large, relatively flat floor. A trout bum could sleep back there. All durangos have a long, narrow storage compartment under the floor just inside the rear lift gate. With enough space for the jack, flares and other roadside equipment. An additional storage compartment replaces the footwell when the optional third row is not ordered.  slt trim is currently discounted at $2,730 and includes a long list of luxury amenities, starting with leather upholstery.  overall, the interior design is executed well. Matching plastic trim provides an organic appearance. The seats appear rather plain, but they are comfortable. Carpeting is carried through to the backs of the rear headrests, which do not have to be removed when the seats are folded down.  the driving position is comfortable with good visibility over an attractive rounded hoodline. Instruments are big and easy to read, though the speedometer appears busy with 2 1/2-mph hash marks. Power outside mirrors are easy to adjust with a big knob on the driver's door. Cupholders and storage trays are nicely designed, while a digital compass and other useful readouts is overhead. Large buttons on the leather wrapped steering wheel operate one of the most well-designed cruise control systems we've seen. driving impressionas sport-utilities go, the durango is fun to drive. We spent a week with the big 5. 9-liter magnum v8 in the washington area. It always feels willing to get down the road quickly with excellent throttle response and quick acceleration.  a daylong drive though the texas hill country west of san antonio showed us dodge's 5. 2-liter v8 also has lots of power for undulating highways and steep, rocky trails. The durango handled well when driven briskly down narrow roads with tight corners and sweeping turns. Compared to other sport-utilities, the durango feels sporty. Steering is precise and the suspension provides excellent transient response, crisply turning from left to right and back again. Shifting is smooth and responsive and transmission ratios are matched well to the healthy torque of the two v8s.  peeling off the pavement, we bounced down rocky, unpaved roads through the hills. We'd drive a durango anywhere.  durango's competent off-road capability and on-road handling response don't come as a free lunch, however. We found ride quality on downtown washington's crumbling infrastructure a bit on the harsh side. It also compares favorably to the full-size ford expedition, chevrolet tahoe and gmc yukon.  while it may compare with other suvs, it certainly doesn't look like them. Dodge durango makes a statement. We think it's a bold, attractive statement. We think dodge succeeded at its goal of producing a smarter suv. 2002 dodge dakota review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Dodge strategically promotes the dakota as the biggest, most powerful, most capable compact pickup on the market. Or as shakespeare might have put it: a dakota by any other name would be precisely the same size. While some competitive extended cabs feature short auxiliary doors behind the main doors, the dakota club cab comes with two doors only.  regular and club cabs are offered in three trim levels: base, sport and slt. Base regular cab 2wd retails for $14,810; sport regular cab 2wd goes for $15,855; and slt regular cab sells for $16,415. Sport adds better seats and interior trim and upgrades to the exterior. Slt comes with v6 power, gray fascias, and bright bumpers and grille. Quad cabs start at the sport level, powered by the v6.  the new sxt model, available only with a regular or club cab, adds 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear stabilizer bar, cloth bucket seats, carpeting, and special graphite metallic exterior trim. A 120-horsepower, 2. 5-liter inline-4 is standard on regular and club cabs in base or sport trim. Slt's and all quad cabs come with a 175-horsepower 3. 9-liter v6. Rounding out the option list are a 235-horsepower 4. 7-liter v8, and a 5. 9-liter v8 that produces 245 or 250 horsepower, depending on model. Manual transmissions are offered with all but the 5. 9. The other is a full-time system that emphasizes all-weather traction.  the r/t group adds $2,190 to the cost of a regular or club cab, and features a high-performance version of the 5. 9-liter v8. R/t's also pack aggressive (255/55r17) blackwall tires on 17-inch aluminum wheels, heavy-duty stabilizer bars, a lowered (by one inch) handling-oriented suspension, limited-slip rear differential, bucket seats, a floor console, fog lights, special trim and a long list of convenience items. walkarounddakota shares its freightliner styling with the full-size dodge ram. Bold lines give it a big, burly look, like it's ready to take on anything that comes its way.  regular and club cabs have a 6-foot 6-inch bed, a good size for a compact truck. The quad cab, on the other hand, has a 5-foot 3-inch bed. According to dodge, people seldom need the full length of the longer bed. Those who need more cargo space can consider an optional bed extender, an aluminum cage that flips over the lowered tailgate to extend the bed by 18 inches. Sometimes the bed extender works great, but a lowered tailgate with a mesh opening won't hold dirt back like longer bed with a solid tailgate. The instrument panel was made easier to reach and easier to use, and almost all of the switchgear was changed. A notable example is the rotary dial for the electrically controlled transfer case, replacing the lever used previously. Door trim and carpeting were updated, as were the center and overhead consoles. Leather became an option on quad cabs, where it costs an extra $580 in 2002. A three-channel home security transceiver joins the option list.  visibility from inside the dakota quad cab is outstanding. The driver sits high and there are no obvious blind spots. Optional 6x9-inch mirrors improve visibility rearward. The quad cab is roomy and comfortable. The wide console works well as a storage area for miscellaneous junk, but it gets in the way when fastening seat belts. A pullout cup holder at the foot of the center section is a nice touch. The driver and front seat passenger had tons of legroom.  the rear doors open wide - about 37 inches. Getting in and out of the rear seat is aided by the fact that there is no cutout for the rear wheels (like there is in many sport-utilities). But a lack of clearance for heads and feet make getting out a bit more difficult than it should be.  the rear seating area in the dakota quad cab is roomier than that of any other compact truck. But that only makes it the best of a bad lot, and legroom, particularly, is limited. There's good knee room, and plenty of headroom, but not a lot of foot space, so don't plan on stretching out. As in most of the smaller ``crew cab' pickups, the rear seat back is bolt upright and not very comfortable. Children and smaller adults should be happy enough back there, but taller folk will find the space confining. It also featured a trip computer and odometer that reports fuel economy and fuel tank range. We hit one particularly sandy section and switched easily into 4wd without dropping speed. Later, on a steep hill, we switched into 4wd-low and easily walked up a good 15 degree grade.  only on washboard stretches of hard-packed dirt roads did the back end tend to lose its grip at speed - and even then only in two-wheel-drive mode. That's a fault common to most unloaded pickups. We were impressed with the quad cab's turning radius. For a truck its length, it makes relatively tight turns.  the brakes deliver straight and true stopping power. This transmission was designed in tandem with the 4. 7-liter engine and they are precisely calibrated to each other, with an onboard computer continuously adjusting the shift pattern to match the way the truck is driven. A 3. 0:1 low ratio provides plenty of leverage to get rolling, followed by a shift up into a torquy 1. 67:1 second. But a kickdown from direct-drive third engages a higher-speed second ratio of 1. 50:1, which dodge says is better for passing. This is chevrolet's attempt to offer the kind of equipment, power, value and price that competes directly against the honda civic, toyota corolla, and ford focus.  chevrolet says the cobalt is the quietest, stiffest, strongest, most refined small car it has ever built, and after a test drive, we give them high marks on almost all counts. Cobalt features an expressive design and a dynamic driving experience. The base car comes with disc/drum brakes, and the others come with disc/disc brakes with abs. The sport package 595) includes a brushed metal trim package for the dashboard, white-faced gauges, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, rear spoiler and 16-inch alloy wheels with pirelli tires.  safety features include dual-stage front air bags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, rear center shoulder belts, and the latch child seat retention system. All but base models come with abs. Other safety features cost extra. Head curtain side air bags 395) designed to provide head protection are optional. And the opel astra in europe. But with its single-bar grille and bowtie emblem, it looks like a proper chevrolet small car right down to its shoes and socks.  there are huge plastic bumper fascias on both ends of the car and the body panel fits are extremely tight. So tight, in fact, that there are no rubber trim gaskets around the compound complex headlamps.  the coupe bears a stronger resemblance in its shape to the cavalier than the sedan, which has a new and more modern roofline sweep. The base, ls and lt coupe and sedan models have no spoiler as standard (it's optional), and the ss coupe version carries a huge, tall rear spoiler than certainly makes a design and intent statement.  cobalt is heavier, longer, wider and lower than most of its direct competitors, its engine is the most powerful base engine in the class, and its interior dimensions and trunk capacity are close to the competition in every respect. After 10 years and 6 million cavaliers, chevrolet has learned a few lessons, and that's apparent in the size, shape and equipment of the cobalt. interiorinside the cobalt, the design theme is simple and straightforward, but far from the el cheapo appointments of the old cavalier. There's just enough chrome trim here and there on knobs and instruments to brighten things up without a lot of glare from the shiny parts. Instruments are large, well placed, and easy to read, with nice graphic treatment throughout.  cobalt is unique in the subcompact class in that three completely different seats are offered in base, ls and lt, and ss versions, each with detail changes in foam, padding and trim. There was plenty of fore/aft and rake adjustment for a 6-foot, 4-inch driver, plus seat height adjustment with a ratcheting handle. It raises and stays in position by itself.) the trunk is wide and deep with a low liftover height, and almost 14 cubic feet of capacity, more than competitive in the class. In addition, there's a 60/40-split, fold-down rear seat with a trunk pass-through feature. driving impressionwe found the cobalt quite pleasant to drive, and almost eerily quiet for a car that costs well under $20,000. Chevrolet has put what feels like hundreds of dollars worth of special door seals, sandwich steel panels, thick carpets and pads, noise blockers and noise absorbers throughout the front, middle and rear of the car, and normal front-seat conversation is possible at speeds over 90 mph.  the cobalt lt is not the address of driving excitement, however. We think it's a handsome, well-equipped car.
