2008 hyundai elantra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Roomy and affordable compact sedan. introductionthe hyundai elantra was completely redesigned for 2007, and the 2008 models come standard with more safety features. the elantra features handsome styling with nice lines. The ride is good, although a bad freeway with relentless sharp bumps is more than the elantra can accept without passing on some of the annoyance to the front seats. We found the brakes excellent and the cornering good. for 2008, the elantra se comes with electronic stability control and brake assist, which were not available on 2007 models. A tire pressure monitoring system has been added. because the elantra generally costs less than the competition, it might well be a long-term bargain. Xm satellite radio is built into the sound system. the se 16,225) is the sporty model and includes all the options in the gls preferred package, plus a telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, and 16-inch alloy wheels with wider profile tires. A premium package 1150) includes a power sunroof and heated front seats. A tire pressure monitoring system comes standard on all models. It's vastly better looking than before; the elantra no longer announces that it's for old folks. It's 2. 2 inches taller, 2. 0 inches wider, and 1. 6 inches longer in wheelbase than the previous-generation elantra. Still, with all the aggressive designs on the road nowadays, a compact car like the elantra, clean as it is, won't catch many eyes. the elantra received a lot of careful design work, and could pass for being seamless. That quality fitting also reveals itself in the smooth opening and closing of the doors. the elantra's good looks move this korean compact car toward the world of the stylish. Its sculpture is clean, with a high beltline running along at the body-colored door handles. It's got a subtle face, with trapezoidal headlamps having rounded edges, leading down and in to a cup-shaped grille with three simple chrome bars. At the bottom of the fascia is a long, slim air intake with two bars. It lacks definitive fender flares because it doesn't need them; the elantra doesn't shout to be seen. The wheel covers, which are silver plastic on the gls, look good from a distance. interiorthe 2008 hyundai elantra is larger than pre-2007 models, making for a roomier car than the toyota corolla or honda civic. The added width and height increased the elantra's cabin volume to 112. 1 cubic feet, among the best in the compact class. the front seats are quite comfortable, with good bolstering, and the standard beige cloth is smooth though unexciting. The arcs of the speedo and tach are a thin blue line, with red needles pointing the way. the radio control knobs are blessedly simple, like radio knobs should be. But we didn't care for the trim on the dash; imagine a silver plastic golf ball. in the rear, the 35 inches of leg room is a half-inch more than the civic and sentra, and 1. 5 inches less than the 2009 corolla, give or take a tenth. But the elantra has good hip room. elantra has a large trunk. For carrying cargo, the rear seatbacks fold down to allow a pass-through into the trunk. However, the opening isn't vast like the nissan sentra's. storage compartments are abundant. There's a neat box inside the top of the dash, and a sunglasses container in the headliner. The fixed door pockets have built-in bottle holders. Below the three climate control knobs there's a small companion to the glovebox, and below that, forward of the shift lever, there's also an open storage area. There are two cupholders behind that, and a double console under the driver's elbow. generally, the interior is notably quiet, for a compact car. The elantra is surprisingly, pleasantly, game, however. It's a rare front-wheel-drive compact car that can pass this test. The elantra will spin the inside front wheel, but it keeps turning around the corner instead of sliding straight ahead. The suspension engineers have done something right, in the front end of the elantra. the elantra is softer all around than the sportier nissan sentra or mazda3. Overall, it's a good fit for someone who just wants good transportation without attitude. It asks less involvement from the driver than those other two. the brakes are excellent. We really stood on them a few times, and they didn't allow the car to dart or weave while they sharply brought down the speed. the five-speed manual gearbox worked well. The tachometer shows 3500 rpm at that speed, and it's not in the least bit buzzy. It also accelerates away at low rpm in a higher gear, with 136 pound-feet of torque. Redesigned for 2007, the styling holds its own in the class; it looks very clean but doesn't try to draw attention to itself. The seats are comfortable, the brakes are excellent, and cornering capability is good, making it enjoyable to drive. New supercrew is best light-duty crew cab available. introductionthe f-150 is available in every imaginable pickup truck configuration. It can act like a serious work truck, an off-road toy, or a luxurious everyday vehicle that doubles as a highly capable weekend tool. There's even a hot rod. it comes in a myriad of bed lengths, two different body styles, and now three distinct cab configurations. Crew cabs have become the big fad in compact and mid-size trucks the past couple of years, but with the exception of the tried-and-true super-long heavy-duty models, this new full-size ford crew cab is by far the most comfortable of the new trucks. Overall length is kept short by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5 1/2 feet; though the bed is a compromise, it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup that's as long as an aircraft carrier. The supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with power-adjustable pedals and optional moonroof, rear-seat entertainment system, and a handsome leather interior. as for the rest of the 2001 f-150 line, power-adjustable pedals are standard on all lariat models and optional on xl and xlt trim lines. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is now a standard feature on xlt models. lineupthree engines are available: the standard engine is a 4. 2-liter v6 engine that generates 202 horsepower. The optional 4. 6-liter v8 produces 220 horsepower. The 5. 4-liter v8 produces 260 horsepower. And there are three trim levels: xl, xlt, and lariat. With colors and options thrown in, the model matrix is huge. walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, with much more attention paid to aerodynamic performance than either the dodge or gm pickups. It is rounder, friendlier and looks much more like a car than the dodge or gm. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. The current chevrolet and gmc trucks are still pretty new (they were redesigned for the 1999 model year), but their conservative styling doesn't look as modern as the ford's. The dodge ram looks long in the tooth, by comparison. The f-150's aerodynamic hood falls away very rapidly from the base of the windshield so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck; that's handy for maneuvering off road, for parking, and when maneuvering in tight city traffic. interiorin some ways, the ford f-150 interior is superior in flavor to the gm and dodge trucks. The f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's successful passenger cars, such as the ford taurus and lincoln continental. The designers adapted these cues to the pickup's large cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the ford f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and better executed than the competition, big and bold but not outsized for a big vehicle. the f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats have a recline feature and a lumbar support on the driver's side for even more driving comfort. all pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Rear-seat comfort is such that and adult should be able to ride back there for longer trips. supercrew's rear seats fold down (and are split 60/40), offering a nearly flat cargo space. It's a great place to put cargo or for big dogs. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. driving impressiontwo-wheel-drive f-150s use conventional steel leaf springs at the rear and a coil spring independent front suspension. We find the brakes on ford trucks to be average in stopping power and average in fade characteristics. although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated at 220 horsepower and 290 foot-pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little duff for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. It's cool to have a mountain-bike rack inside the cargo bay. It's cool to be rugged. It's cool to be retro and a trendsetter at the same time. And it's especially cool to be supercharged. there's even more cool for 2003. The naturally aspirated (non-supercharged) v6 is stronger this year. Electronic brake distribution (ebd) is now standard. Traction control, skid control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system are now available. Eye-catching new colors are available, including atomic orange and camouflage. with its unusual blend of style and function, xterra has been a huge success ever since nissan launched this compact sport-utility in 2000. Xterra has prevailed beyond nissan's expectations and hopes. It's still cool. . lineupnissan xterra comes in two trim levels: xe and se. Standard equipment includes a tubular roof rack with removable gear basket, air conditioning, a 100-watt audio system with a cd player, anti-lock brakes and a full-size spare tire. xe v6 20,399) comes with a 3. 3-liter, single overhead-cam v6 that now produces 180 horsepower (10 more than last year) and 202 pounds-feet of torque. For 2003, xe v6 also comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, tubular step rails, and a driver's seat that adjusts for height and lumbar support. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on the v6 xe. Also included are upgraded seats; fog lamps; cruise control; first aid kit; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; power windows, locks and mirrors; variable intermittent wipers; tilt steering wheel; remote keyless entry and, coolest of all, a 300-watt rockford fosgate eight-speaker audio system with subwoofer and in-dash 6-cd changer. a supercharged v6 engine that produces 210 horsepower and 246 pound-feet of torque is available with se trim only. A new rugged leather package 999) for se models includes leather seats and suede-like fabric inserts for the inner doors. A pop-up sunroof with sunshade 349) is available on se models. New for 2003 is the dynamic control package 549), which includes traction and skid control functions, plus a tire-pressure monitoring system. Skull protection is cool. . walkaroundnissan xterra boasts rugged, distinctive styling. It doesn't look like a girly girl suv, though that doesn't mean women won't find it appealing. Men and women find it appealing. Its front end received a major facelift last year (2002), including round headlights (in place of square square ones), a new front fascia that gives it a more muscular look, and a raised hood with a power bulge. the rugged aura is carried through with a thick tubular aluminum roof rack terminating in a black airfoil. Step rails match the roof rack, and stout fender flares frame handsome alloy wheels. The beefy grille and front bumper house big radiator vents and recessed halogen fog lights. Vertical handles on the trailing edge of the rear doors add to xterra's functional appearance, though functionally they're not the best. The two-tiered roof and a tall, square back add to the rugged, utilitarian look. A bulge in the tailgate contains a first aid kit. Nissan says the pathfinder is similar, and nobody ever complained. The instrument cluster features a three-pod cockpit motif. Xe gets gray gauges while se's are bluish. A big new console is outfitted with map pocket, power ports and push-out cup holders. The glove box grew by 25 percent, and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning controls were revised. the long-criticized, dash-mounted, pull-and-twist parking brake was replaced with a foot-operated pedal. This is a big improvement, though we'd prefer a proper hand-brake lever. The manual shift lever is on the tall size. the front bucket seats are comfortable and supportive. They fit well and provide good lumbar support. A cd changer holds six cds, which can be selected with the six radio station buttons. Three big retro-looking rotary knobs with wings control the heater. Auxiliary dc outlets are provided front and rear, in addition to the cigarette lighter. se models have cruise control and radio controls located on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, with wide spokes positioned at 3, 9, 5 and 7 o'clock. The whole padded center is the horn, the best and safest operation because of quick access. The horn is tinny but strong, a no-frills statement. we took the xterra windsurfing, and were wishing for the accessory seat covers made of wetsuit material. Other nice available cabin details include the side window demisters and rear heat ducts, smart storage crannies, as many as 10 cargo hooks on floor and ceiling, and a strap on the tailgate to close it from the inside. rear seating is not the most comfortable. There's not much side support. Rear passengers can slide their feet under the front seats, but it's a little tight, an inch less than in the smaller toyota rav4. There's lots of headroom, though. The roof is raised over the rear seats to allow them to be positioned higher than the front seats, providing a theater view through the windshield. because the xterra is built on the frontier pickup truck platform, nissan engineers must have been challenged to squeeze everything in, while providing lots of good cargo space (65. 6 cubic feet with the seats folded down, 44. 5 cubic feet with the seats up). the 50-50 rear seatbacks fold down fairly flat, but the seat bottoms must be removed. Nissan has also added metal ceiling tie-down clips in the cargo area. . driving impressionnissan xterra feels tight, smooth, and refined, in a utilitarian sort of way. Thanks to high-tech sound insulation in places not normally insulated, the xterra is quiet at freeway speeds. And the luggage rack hisses in the wind. xterra sways with gusts and leans in curves, not surprising given its height and boxy shape. That big vertical rear window provides excellent visibility, but it gathers dust and dirt like crazy; fortunately, a rear wiper/washer is now standard on all xterra models. xterra is nimble at slower speeds, feeling lighter than its 4046 pounds. The steering is very nice. The suspension does a great job on washboard gravel roads. Power steering is by recirculating ball. The body rides on the backs of 10 individually tuned dual-rate rubber chassis mounts, so there's no harshness there at all. The xterra rides much better than the frontier pickup, while sharing the frontier's strong ladder-type frame. the naturally aspirated, 180-horsepower 3. 3-liter v6 is challenged to smartly drag the 4wd xterra's body weight of 4046 pounds. A heavy-duty full-size with everyday comfort. introductionthough it's now the oldest design among current full-size pickups, the dodge ram may still be the best-looking truck on the market. Clearly, it's the most stylish. it drives and rides well with quick steering and excellent brakes. Five engines are offered: 3. 9-liter v6, 5. 2-liter v8, 5. 9-liter v8, 8. 0-liter v10 and two cummins 5. 9-liter diesel inline-6 choices. Every engine comes with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Short and long beds are available. the 5. 2-liter v8 produces 230 horsepower, while the 5. 9-liter v8 generates 245 horsepower and an impressive 335 pounds-feet of torque. The basic cummins diesel produces 235 horsepower and 460 pounds-feet of torque, while the new-for-2001 high-output version cranks out 245 horsepower and a stump-pulling 505 pounds-feet of torque. standard, club cab and quad cab bodies are available in lt, laramie slt, and sst trim levels. The bold design with broad-shouldered front fenders is reminiscent of big freightliners steaming down the road with a full load of logs. It remains the best-looking pickup on the market. To improve structural rigidity, dodge designed a beam that runs laterally under the truck, and reinforced both the a and c pillars. Side door guard beams were also added to improve protection from side impacts. the optional sport package comes with a body-colored grille and front and rear bumpers, decals, fog lamps, outline white letter tires, and cast aluminum wheels. The absence of a b-pillar makes it much easier to get in or out of the rear seat; it also makes it much easier to stick something behind the front seats. This includes a new steering wheel design, a big storage compartment, an extra power point, and new cupholders designed to handle any commercially available drink container. Other recent improvements include a keyless remote entry system, an upgraded base sound system, a cassette and cd sound system option and a new center console. The instrument pod features vacuum-fluorescent odometer and trip odometer that are tamperproof, and there are driver-programmable keyless entry key fobs. Other interior features include heated power mirrors, illuminated power door locks and window switches, and an optional security alarm system. the front seat in all rams is divided 40/20/40, with a huge fold-down center section that doubles as armrest and writing table. When no one is sitting in it, the center position provides a large storage box, with divided spaces for coins, cassettes, maps or a laptop computer. The front seat belts are integrated into the seats themselves, which gets rid of messy hanging belts -- a particularly nice improvement for the wide-open quad cab doorway. the quad cab rear seat is the same one used in other extended cab versions. It's handy for children, pets and petite adults, but it is not very comfortable for adults on long trips. The bench portion of the seat flips up out of the way effortlessly from either side for hauling tools or cargo. The power window option comes with an express-down switch on the driver's side. Steering wheel mounted radio controls are optional. There are two new overhead console designs; one with and one without trip computer. This engine has a ton of torque and a broad power band, which makes it a great deal of fun to drive. Passing is effortless. The manual transmission can add flexibility in off-road situations, but we recommend the automatic for street use. Rear suspension is a conventional live axle with leaf springs designed to carry heavy loads. The dodge v8 pickup truck has for years had a special kind of presence on the street, and the ram backs up that presence with excellent street manners and ride. steering revisions that were new last year make steering much more precise than earlier models. Steering in the earlier rams was light and quick, but had a lot of dead space on-center and seemed to require constant left-right adjustments. braking, with discs in front, drums in rear, is exemplary. The ram stops quickly with superb straight-line stability. Recent improvements to the instrumentation, powertrain and body combinations have made it an all-around better truck.
