2007 nissan altima review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The nissan altima has been totally redesigned for 2007. It looks more like the maxima now. It's a couple of inches shorter on the outside, but has more room on the inside, including a spacious trunk. Fold-down rear seats allow the trunk to expand into the cabin for carrying big long things. the object of the redesign was to bring the feel and power of a luxury car to this everyman's midsize sedan, and nissan has succeeded, at least with the altima model that has the v6 engine and all the options, including plush leather. It makes 270 horsepower, more than what's available in other midsize cars (excluding turbocharged or expensive sports sedans), along with 258 pound-feet of torque. The price for that power: the v6 requires premium fuel and gets 22/28 mpg. another thing that makes the altima stand out is its new optional cvt, or continuously variable transmission. It's the only automatic transmission available in this car, and it's a winner with its manual mode, which allows six speeds or ranges. A cvt improves gas mileage because there's less internal friction. the handling is true, and the suspension is quite firm without ever being harsh. It inspires confidence. It's a match for rough pavement and is steady and predictable in extreme situations. The altima also comes loaded with safety features. an intelligent key comes standard in the altima. This might be convenient for some, but it leads to new problems, having to do with the memory of the human brain and confusion of the car's electronic brain. lineupthe 2007 nissan altima is initially available as five models: the 2. 5, 2. 5s, 2. 5sl, 3. 5se and 3. 5sl. Air conditioning does not come standard. the 2. 5s adds air conditioning, a six-speaker sound system, remote keyless entry, power sideview mirrors, and speed-sensitive intermittent wipers, among other smaller things. the 2. 5sl uses the continuously variable transmission, and adds leather interior with heated front seats and power driver's seat, moonroof, alloy wheels, dual-zone temp controls and rear air conditioning vents, among other smaller things. the 3. 5 se uses the powerful v6 engine with the six-speed manual gearbox and cloth interior. It adds abs, traction control, and 17-inch alloy wheels, plus heated sideview mirrors and other features. the 3. 5sl has most of the things listed above, but goes back down to 16-inch alloy wheels. It adds high-intensity xenon headlights, foglamps, bluetooth hands-free phone system, and nine-speaker bose cd/mp3 sound system. a technology package includes the navigation system, a rearview monitor and satellite radio. On the higher priced models, anti-lock brakes are standard and electronic stability control is optional. Abs includes electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. Electronic stability control, which nissan calls vdc (vehicle dynamic control) is optional on 3. 5 models. walkaroundthe new 2007 nissan altima looks quite stylish, especially for a mid-size car. The body has gotten a makeover, and features a number of pleasing changes. Like some other new cars, in particular lexus, the fender flares are edgy and extend farther than before, allowing the body itself to be narrower and offer less frontal area. The gap between the tires and flares has been tightened. Overall aerodynamics are improved from 0. 33 to 0. 31, thanks to many things as always, not least the more steeply sloped windshield. the wheelbase has been shortened by nearly an inch, and the overall length cut by 2. 5 inches, with shorter overhangs. The cowl was moved forward and rear glass rearward, which allowed for no overall decrease in cabin space. The beltline is low so there's more side glass, which adds to the roomy feeling. the headlamps and taillamps appear almost exotic, certainly elaborate. As for the taillamps, nissan says they cost nearly as much as the headlamps (so don't back into anything!), and they definitely do look expensive. They're covered with clear plastic like the headlamps, and contain a silver ray-gun looking cylinder with the red lamp, plus a round white beam for the backup light and a big orange piece for the parking lamp and turn signal. interiorin redesigning the altima, nissan engineers were assigned to create more cabin space, and given one inch less to work with, on account of the reduction in wheelbase. They met their goal by stretching the distance between a-pillar and c-pillar, thus shortening the cowl and deck. There are 1. 7 inches less legroom in front, but 3. 1 inches more in the rear, and that's a lot; however, 0. 8 inches of rear headroom has been lost. Trunk space has grown from 15. 6 cubic feet to 17. 9. the seats are relatively large. They feel firm and longer and higher than in last year's models. We've been in many luxury cars that didn't feel this classy inside. More soft materials are used, for touches like padded armrests, and the overall level of refinement is higher than with the former altima. It's the common and practical tripod design, with speedo in center, tachometer on left and gas and temp on right. The lettering is sharp, white on black, with red needles. the center stack is neatly designed, with three dual-zone hvac vents at top over the sound system and good knobs, leading down to usable storage slots and the transmission lever, in this case for the cvt. The space for the big glovebox was created by downsizing the air conditioning unit, but nissan says there's no compromise in ac effectiveness; in fact, nissan says the ac is best in class, thanks to improved airflow and a quieter fan. the intelligent key is standard on all altima models, but we don't think it's so smart. It may be true that women don't like to bother with putting a key in an ignition, as the manufacturers say, and like to keep their keys in their purse at all times; but it's also true that since intelligent keys have been invented, there has been a rash of dead batteries. It's left on the accessories mode, and drains the juice. Not even with a passenger totally devoted to the challenge, while we were stuck in traffic.

These upgrades add sports appeal, though we wouldn't classify the xrs as the kind of sport compact that fuels enthusiast magazines. the seats are comfortable and supportive, whether ordered with cloth or leather. Big heating and air conditioning controls are simple, radio controls are straightforward, the cup holders work well, and cubbies are available for stashing stuff out of the way, making for a tidy, convenient cabin. Corolla earns an epa-estimated 32/40 mpg city/highway when equipped with a manual transmission. Both the manual and the automatic transmissions offer smooth shifting, and the manual is very easy to operate. All models have a smooth, comfortable ride and responsive handling. safety is enhanced by ordering optional curtain-style airbags and side-impact airbags designed to provide additional head and torso protection in a side-impact. Optional anti-lock brakes help the driver maintain steering control after slamming on the brakes. The corolla xrs gets a 164-horsepower engine. (note that although horsepower numbers appear lower for the 2006 models, it is due to a change in how the sae calculates net horsepower. Special interior and exterior trim distinguishes the xrs. Additional standard equipment includes anti-lock brakes with tire-pressure monitors, front and rear disc brakes, and cruise control. walkaroundthe corolla looks like a small camry. Its ovoid headlights are similar and its rakish yet curved shape is in keeping with the camry and lexus es 330. Thick a-pillars at the front and thick c-pillars at the rear give the corolla a solid look while hefty bumpers add to its substantial appearance. corolla comes standard with 15-inch steel wheels, but looks like it could do with larger wheels and tires that would fill out the wheel wells more effectively. The taillights match the shape of the headlights nicely. Part of the taillight module is actually mounted in the trunk lid. This is fine except that the design causes the trunk lid to be narrower than it might be. the doors have reasonably wide openings, which makes getting in and out easy. That's a benefit of the long wheelbase (102. 4 inches), which also means that the rear wheel wells do not protrude into the rear door as much as they do on some compact cars. The corolla's looks and handling are enhanced by its relatively long wheelbase and relatively short overhangs front and rear. (the overhang is the distance from the wheels to the ends of the car). the corolla s is distinguished by its sporty front spoiler, body-colored side rocker panels and rear skirt, along with its fog lamps and smoked headlamp masking. the xrs gets 16-inch wheels that visually fill the wheel wells better. Distinguishing the xrs are a rear color-keyed spoiler, a color-keyed bezel surrounding the grille, and unique badges. interiorthe corolla's interior doesn't feel like a small car nor does it feel cheap, like many compacts do. there's plenty of front legroom and headroom. The corolla seems particularly well suited to shorter people who often find it fits them perfectly. Big and tall people may find the accommodations cramped, however. the back seats offer a decent amount of room for two average-size adults. Seat belts are provided for a third rear-seat passenger, but there's little space for such a person. materials used in the seats appear classy with nice fit and finish. The leather seats have a luxurious soft pleated finish, while the center console and door panels have wood-like veneer trim. Okay, it's fake, but it's so well made that it looks more realistic than the real wood found in some luxury cars. Both the le and s models get a sporty leather-wrapped steering wheel that adds to the enjoyment of driving. the xrs gets sport seats, a silver-colored instrument cluster and switch plates, lexus-like optitron gauges, and a leather-like shift boot and leather shift knob. the dashboard is nicely laid out with exemplary ergonomics and a finish comparable to that of more expensive cars. Its top surface sweeps across the width of the car in a slight s-curve and wraps into the door trim. Each side of the center console seamlessly blends up to the lower portion of the dash. Three large round knobs for the heating and air conditioning system are located below the radio. The handle for the parking brake is located on the left of the center console so there's room for a small storage cubbyhole on the right. storage space is generous. The glove box is big and there are small pockets in each door. Map lights for upper models are mounted on the rearview mirror, not the ideal location as it's easy to mess up the mirror adjustment when trying to switch on a light. the instrument panel is dominated by three overlapping round gauges, a large speedometer, a smaller tachometer to the left and a water temperature gauge and fuel gauge mounted in a matching circle to the right. They incorporate red lettering on a plain white background and are easy to read at night. There's also an outside temperature readout on all models. the trunk is one of the biggest in this class. The gooseneck hinges intrude into the cargo space and can crush fragile items if they are in the way, but.

2008 hyundai elantra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Roomy and affordable compact sedan. introductionthe hyundai elantra was completely redesigned for 2007, and the 2008 models come standard with more safety features. the elantra features handsome styling with nice lines. The ride is good, although a bad freeway with relentless sharp bumps is more than the elantra can accept without passing on some of the annoyance to the front seats. We found the brakes excellent and the cornering good. for 2008, the elantra se comes with electronic stability control and brake assist, which were not available on 2007 models. A tire pressure monitoring system has been added. because the elantra generally costs less than the competition, it might well be a long-term bargain. Xm satellite radio is built into the sound system. the se 16,225) is the sporty model and includes all the options in the gls preferred package, plus a telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, and 16-inch alloy wheels with wider profile tires. A premium package 1150) includes a power sunroof and heated front seats. A tire pressure monitoring system comes standard on all models. It's vastly better looking than before; the elantra no longer announces that it's for old folks. It's 2. 2 inches taller, 2. 0 inches wider, and 1. 6 inches longer in wheelbase than the previous-generation elantra. Still, with all the aggressive designs on the road nowadays, a compact car like the elantra, clean as it is, won't catch many eyes. the elantra received a lot of careful design work, and could pass for being seamless. That quality fitting also reveals itself in the smooth opening and closing of the doors. the elantra's good looks move this korean compact car toward the world of the stylish. Its sculpture is clean, with a high beltline running along at the body-colored door handles. It's got a subtle face, with trapezoidal headlamps having rounded edges, leading down and in to a cup-shaped grille with three simple chrome bars. At the bottom of the fascia is a long, slim air intake with two bars. It lacks definitive fender flares because it doesn't need them; the elantra doesn't shout to be seen. The wheel covers, which are silver plastic on the gls, look good from a distance. interiorthe 2008 hyundai elantra is larger than pre-2007 models, making for a roomier car than the toyota corolla or honda civic. The added width and height increased the elantra's cabin volume to 112. 1 cubic feet, among the best in the compact class. the front seats are quite comfortable, with good bolstering, and the standard beige cloth is smooth though unexciting. The arcs of the speedo and tach are a thin blue line, with red needles pointing the way. the radio control knobs are blessedly simple, like radio knobs should be. But we didn't care for the trim on the dash; imagine a silver plastic golf ball. in the rear, the 35 inches of leg room is a half-inch more than the civic and sentra, and 1. 5 inches less than the 2009 corolla, give or take a tenth. But the elantra has good hip room. elantra has a large trunk. For carrying cargo, the rear seatbacks fold down to allow a pass-through into the trunk. However, the opening isn't vast like the nissan sentra's. storage compartments are abundant. There's a neat box inside the top of the dash, and a sunglasses container in the headliner. The fixed door pockets have built-in bottle holders. Below the three climate control knobs there's a small companion to the glovebox, and below that, forward of the shift lever, there's also an open storage area. There are two cupholders behind that, and a double console under the driver's elbow. generally, the interior is notably quiet, for a compact car. The elantra is surprisingly, pleasantly, game, however. It's a rare front-wheel-drive compact car that can pass this test. The elantra will spin the inside front wheel, but it keeps turning around the corner instead of sliding straight ahead. The suspension engineers have done something right, in the front end of the elantra. the elantra is softer all around than the sportier nissan sentra or mazda3. Overall, it's a good fit for someone who just wants good transportation without attitude. It asks less involvement from the driver than those other two. the brakes are excellent. We really stood on them a few times, and they didn't allow the car to dart or weave while they sharply brought down the speed. the five-speed manual gearbox worked well. The tachometer shows 3500 rpm at that speed, and it's not in the least bit buzzy. It also accelerates away at low rpm in a higher gear, with 136 pound-feet of torque. Redesigned for 2007, the styling holds its own in the class; it looks very clean but doesn't try to draw attention to itself. The seats are comfortable, the brakes are excellent, and cornering capability is good, making it enjoyable to drive.
