More importantly, both deliver the bold styling, rear-drive performance and affordability that have been mustang hallmarks for decades.    retro inspired, to be sure, the mustang is nonetheless a thoroughly modern car. Launched for 2005 with a clean-sheet design, the mustang is faster and more agile than ever. It's also quieter and better built (even the convertible), and it rides more smoothly. So trimmed, the mustang looks more aggressively handsome than ever, and nearly identical to the concept cars that grabbed everyone's attention at the 2004 north american international auto show.  nothing says modern american sporty car better than this mustang. Its long hood and short rear deck capitalize on 40 years of mustang history. The current mustang features classic design cues that have defined mustangs since the 1960s: c-scoops in the sides, three-element tail lamps and a galloping horse badge in the center of the grille. Its menacing shark-like nose is reminiscent of the 1967 model. Everything under the car has been upgraded substantially from previous mustang levels: bigger brakes by nearly 20 percent, completely new front and rear suspension designs that yield much quieter, smoother ride as well as much more precise steering during hard cornering, improved engines and new transmissions. Optional antilock brakes bundled with traction control give any driver much more of a fighting chance in bad situations by allowing the driver to brake and steer at the same time.  the engines are mounted to the body with hydraulic engine mounts, which absorb and counteract vibration and pulsing. By adapting ideas and components from luxury cars, ford has given the current mustang a level of sophistication its predecessors never had. Yet the mustang heritage of low-cost performance and flashy styling has not been compromised one iota. We know, because we've driven every generation since the original debuted in the spring of 1964.  perhaps most retro of all mustang features is a new-for-2006 pony package for v6 models. This includes a grille with gt-style round fog lamps and a chrome bezel, or corral, around the traditional mustang prancing horse. The package includes 17-inch wheels, front-fender pony badges, a lower door stripe, and a rear spoiler. interiorthe styling themes that so readily identify the 2006 mustang are apparent inside, too. The interior is as blatantly throwback as the exterior, and nearly as well done. It's sporty and crisp in appearance and straightforward in function.  there's a very heavy dose of 1967 mustang inside, with two distinct right and left pods, blended with modern touches. Chrome-ringed air vents align across the dash, precisely in line with the gauges, and the steering wheel has three spokes with a center hub marked by the horse and tricolor bars logo. While some of the materials have a cost-saving look and feel, the package is not bad given the high style and price of entry. An interior upgrade package, with satin or dark-finish aluminum inserts, goes a long way toward eliminating traces of cheapness. Speaking of brightening, however, there's enough shiny metal on this car's dash and steering wheel to create some glare problems for drivers on sunny days. Just like the old days.  these are the good old days in terms of roominess in the mustang. Thanks to a longer wheelbase and larger overall size, there is a lot more hip, leg, elbow and shoulder room inside this mustang that in any previous generation. We found the front bucket seats to be comfortable, supportive and retentive in hard corners. The 2+2 back seat, however, isn't much more accommodating than before, and it's not a place adults will want to spend any time.  the trunk, however, is as large as those in some more overtly practical sedans, and the folding rear seat expands cargo space even further.  the basic sound system that comes with the car is pretty darn good. The 500-watt upgrade is reasonably priced in the premium package, and adds a six-cd changer. The 1000-watt upgrade will impress most audiophiles, but the extra subwoofers in the trunk steal a good chunk of cargo space. We'd be inclined to pass on those. driving impressionthe 2006 mustang improves those things that have appealed to so many different kinds of drivers for more than 40 years, and it nearly eliminates some traditionally bad pony car traits. In general, the good has gotten better and the bad, less so.  the previous-generation mustang, a modified, welded version of a chassis that dated to 1979, was about as stiff as wet rope. Ford claims the current mustang's body/frame is 31 percent stiffer, and we won't argue. This mustang is simply much more rigid and rattle-free than its predecessor. A rigid foundation provides the basis for a host of good things, including improved ride quality, sharper handling and less interior vibration.  the new-found solidity even applies to the convertible. Honda in 2006 re-staked its claim to the head of the class with the introduction of a completely reworked and updated civic. And not just in the mainstream, family-car niche, but in the sporty subcompact arena, too, with the return of a hopped-up coupe, the si, the latest reincarnation of the late, lamented crx.  for 2007, everything pretty much remains the same, with one notable exception. Honda's engineers tweaked its suspension to compensate for the sedan's longer wheelbase. Front-seat passengers get the si coupe's sport seats. And both si editions come standard with an electronic stability program for added control in emergency maneuvers.  honda also continues offering a natural gas-powered sedan, the gx, which the company introduced during the 2006 model year. This reduces emissions dramatically, while improving fuel economy.  the 2007 honda civic is available in coupe and sedan versions. Other cars in the class may undercut the civic on pricing, but the civic includes important safety features, including side-impact airbags that others leave on the option list. lineupthe honda civic dx coupe 14,810) and dx sedan 15,010) are the base models. The sedans and coupes don't share any body panels. Trim elements and markings distinguish each iteration. Reinforced mounting points and gussets provide a platform to the sport compact aftermarket to make suspension and certain other modifications without diminishing body integrity.  from the front, a horizontal bar dominates the sedan grille; the si sedan gets a monochrome version of the coupe's grille, with the iconic 'si' badge at the far right end. Slender headlamp assemblies angle upwards as they curve around the fenders. A single, broad air intake fills the lower portion of the fascia.  the coupe grille sports the honda logo suspended in a two-tone frame. As with the si sedan, an understated badge tucked away in the far right reaches of the grille identifies the sporty si version. The coupe headlights are more sharply outlined. The lower air intake opens between two, geometric recesses that feed cooling air to the front disc brakes and house the optional fog lamps. The front ends, but especially the coupes', push the leading corners down and outward, emphasizing the wide track (the distance side to side between the tires).  save for a lower body character line, drawn slightly higher on the coupe than on the sedan, the sides of the new civic are more slab than sensuous. Understated fender blisters, more pronounced on the coupe, break up the otherwise featureless expanse. What excitement there is in the side view is in the sleekness of what honda calls a monoform design. A central expression of this is the windshield, the leading edge of which reaches into the hood all the way to the middle of the front wheel wells, pushing the design concept of cab forward to a new extreme. On the coupe, the windshield is raked at a radical 21. 9 degrees, the sedan's at a barely more upright 23. 9 degrees. The sail (the body panel aft of the rear side window) is unique to each model as well. The coupe's forms an acute angle emphasizing the two-door body style, while the sedan's curves down over the rear door's trailing edge, pulling the eye through the higher roofline. The coupe's be-spoilered, rounded rear profile suggests swiftness. The sedan's somewhat abbreviated trunk lid and chopped off tail end adds perceived mass to the tightly proportioned, smallish sedan. The si coupe wears an i-vtec label just forward of the rear wheel well, the si sedan the same on the lower rear side door.  likewise, the rear view of each body style differs markedly. The coupe's sloping trunk lid settles into a deep cut in the rear bumper, with the license plate sheltered in an equally deep recess. The sedan's trunk lid drops in an almost vertical, unrelieved sheer from a relatively high crest across the top. A blue, cng diamond identifies the gx model. interiorthe civic lx sedan remains the most comfortable civic we've driven. The dx edges more toward spartan inside, while the ex heads toward lush. Fit and finish meet honda standards. Plastic trim elements look high grade, although the multi-piece dash invites concern about high-mileage squeaks and buzzes.  seats are comfortable, not plush. The fabric upholstery feels durable and its robust nap assists the modest side and seat bottom bolsters in restraining occupants during spirited motoring. The si models get sport front seats with more aggressive bolsters both bottom and side for improved support. Seat bottoms provide better than average thigh support. The manual height adjustment on the driver's seat pivots on front hinges, forcing drivers to choose between seat height and legroom.  the view out the front, with the expansive windshield, low cowl and sloping hood, is unparalleled in the class. A commensurately low beltline would enhance side vision, but there's little about which to complain. Tiny front quarter windows on the sedan, necessary to allow the front door windows to roll all the way down, push the side view mirrors a bit too far rearward for qu. More than half of the available space in the convertible's trunk is taken up by the top mechanism when the top is down.  the sebring cabin is pleasant. The look is sleek, and it is all nicely integrated and finished. Some of the interior surfaces are cold and hard to the touch, however. With an available dvd rear-seat entertainment system, and chrysler's mygig hard-disc audio system, the sebring's available technology is as good as or better than anything in the class.  dynamically, the sebring fits middle of the pack in the midsize class. Ride quality is generally pleasant, soaking up most bumps well. Handling is competent in the sedan. The convertible lacked the driving feel of the sedan, however, and exhibited noticeable cowl shake.  introduced as a 2007 model, the sebring sedan gets two changes for 2008, one major and one minor. All-wheel drive is available for 2008 on the limited model. Sirius satellite radio is standard. A substantial, but otherwise unremarkable bumper tops a slim lower air intake bracketed by two, smaller, grille-like openings at the outer ends of which pods provide housings for fog lamps. Molded-in strakes, patterned after those on the crossfire, chrysler's underappreciated sporty coupe, dress up the hood.  there are also differences in balance and proportion between the sedan and convertible. Were the convertible designed as a traditional soft top, we daresay it'd look better. But the retractable hardtop required added length that unsettles the design.  the sedan is decorated with creased character lines on its sides. Flowing rearward from the front quarter panels, these creases spread, expanding the distance between them and emphasizing the car's sharply outlined wedge shape. Mild fender blisters circle the wheel openings. Body-color, anti-ding door moldings are optional on all trim levels. Side windows are framed in flat black. Mirror housings are body color across the line.  the convertible uses the same basic design as the sedan, but the wheelbase looks too long and there's too much of the hindquarters for a two-door. If the expanse of metal between the trailing edge of the door and the rear wheelwell were halved, then it'd fit. But there has to be some place to store large segments of an articulated, metal roof, along with the motors, pumps, and other hardware necessary to lower and raise it. On the sebring convertible, this results in a bulbous back end, with a top surface area nearly the equal to that of the hood. Also, to allow the retracted roof to fit inside the rear quarters, the rearmost edges of the rear pillars must be drawn inward. This awkwardly positions the retractable hardtop roof more on top of the rear fenders than allowing it to smoothly flow down into the side of the car. The look is better on soft top convertibles because the top looks more like a separate piece than an integrated whole.  at the rear of both body styles, large, multi-element taillights wrap around the rear fenders, crossing over into the trunk lid, which has a modest, molded-in lip at its trailing edge. The sedan's trunk lid is shorter than the convertible's trunk lid. The sedan also has a visually jarring inset rear window, which seems to be an effort, however futile, to enlarge the trunk opening while maintaining the desired top-to-bottom proportions.  the sedan's trunk has 13. 6 cubic feet of cargo room, but the opening is quite small, so it won't accept larger boxes. The convertible's trunk opens like a normal trunk with any of the tops up or down and has 13. 1 cubic feet of cargo room.

A high-quality rough rider. introductiontoyota has updated its brawny tacoma pickup with some tweaks to the styling and interior. New front styling gives the trucks a fresh appearance, while an expanded list of standard and optional equipment add comfort and convenience. New to the lineup is an optional off-road package from toyota racing development. But toyota tacoma 4x4 pickups will still be known for their quality, durability, reliability and off-road performance.  toyota has a history of building solid, dependable trucks. The 1998 tacoma builds on that tradition--particularly when it's equipped with the v6 engine.  these trucks don't come cheap, particularly top-of-the-line models. It comes loaded with convenience features, but air conditioning adds $985, an automatic transmission costs $900, and antilock brakes tack on another $590. This sum brings top-drawer off-road performance, many years of reliable service and every luxury feature available.  more modest models are available for those who want a serious work truck without such a serious investment. Two cabs are available. The xtracab rides on a wheelbase that is 18. 6 inches longer with a correspondingly longer body than a standard cab model. Opting for the $835 value edition plus package adds air conditioning, power steering, chrome bumpers, a radio and floor mats; the resulting $13,793 tacoma will haul up to 1684 pounds of stuff, pull a 3500-pound trailer and provide reliable transportation for many years. The 4x4 regular cab with a five-speed manual can haul up to 1,914 pounds of cargo--more than any other tacoma. A v6 tacoma with two-wheel drive and an automatic is a good tow vehicle that's easy to get in and out of and doesn't spill quite as much coffee on the way to work.  the 3. 4-liter v6 produces 220 pound-feet of torque at 3600 rpm. That's enough power to pull a 5000-pound trailer, yet it still gets 23 mpg on the highway. Maximum payload is 1859 pounds in a 4wd regular cab with five-speed manual. A control lever is used to shift into low-range. It comes with front and rear bilstein shock absorbers, locking rear differential, increased-rate front and rear springs, modified rear camber, larger stabilizer bar, big 31x10. 5r15 white-lettered goodyear tires, overfenders (color-keyed on limited models) and a special off-road graphics package.  all tacomas can be further customized with a new package that includes color-keyed front bumper and valance. A color-keyed grille is included with two-wheel-drive trucks.  toyota has shifted the trim level designations a bit for 1998. This year's limited grade replaces the former sr5, while the sr5 package replaces last year's lx. All models feature new tailgate and c-pillar badging. interiorfor 1998, the interior has been updated with new fabric and full door trim with cloth inserts. Two power outlets have been added under the cigar lighter, the dual cupholders are more conveniently located. It's a nice interior. The instruments and switch gear are laid out well and new rotary-type ventilation controls have a nice feel. A driver's dead pedal provides a place to brace the left foot.  the regular cab seats two in comfort. Xtracab models add a 60/40 split front bench seat and rear jump seats with a special restraint system designed for children. It also adds another inch of front legroom. Like almost any pickup, a load in the bed improves the ride quality and handling balance considerably.  also like most pickups, the performance and ride of a tacoma will vary considerably from model to model. It provides lots of power and worked well with the automatic transmission. summarywith its broad array of engine and chassis choices, the tacoma can be tailored to suit a broad variety of pickup duties. 2004 acura tl review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Acura raises the bar for mid-size luxury sedans. introductionacura is reinventing itself. The originator of the japanese-brand luxury car is no longer the leader in the market subsegment, and hasn't been for some time. It bristles with new safety and emissions technology and new features, a few of them nothing less than industry firsts.  the interior has been modernized. The exterior styling marks a fresh departure from the car maker's traditionally conservative design motifs. All but one of the options on last year's list have been moved to the standard column. Horsepower and torque are up, and markedly so. A new transmission is available. And there's only one version, instead of two.  not much more could be different, or much better. Type-s intenders should not be dismayed, however, as honda's luxury car division has endowed the new tl with the essential features and capabilities of the type-s. Topping this list is a stereo system that redefines the overused term premium. Not content with a multi-speaker, externally power-amplified, dvd/cd/cassette/am/fm/xm satellite radio system, acura has added a technology known as dvd-audio 5. 1. Dvds recorded with this technology triple the channels in traditional stereo and virtual (electronically synthesized) surround sound systems, from two to six. The hope is to do for digital recordings what dolby did for analog tapes. This more discrete surround sound is common in recording studio gear and has only recently begun appearing in home entertainment systems. Leather is standard and not only trims the seats and door panels, but also wraps the shift knob and steering wheel. Even lowly carpeted floor mats are standard.  the latest generation of occupant safety developments, including seat-mounted, side-impact and full-cabin, side curtain airbags, are included at no extra cost. Frontal airbags are dual stage and dual threshold, meaning they deploy at different rates depending on the severity of the crash and whether the front seat occupants are belted in. The side-impact airbag sensors note the seat occupant's height and position to minimize potential injury to out-of-place and smaller-stature individuals. The only disappointment, especially from honda, is the omission of a head restraint for the center rear passenger.  xenon high intensity discharge headlights brighten the road ahead of every '04 tl. The greenhouse is that in more than stylist terminology, using green-tinted glass to block some of the sun's heat. A dual-zone, dual-mode, air conditioner automatically does the rest of the job, managing interior temperatures with air cleansed by a micron filter.  acura's navigation system 2000) is the only major option offered (at least initially) for the 2004 tl. The system features voice recognition of 293 verbal commands, including adjustments to the stereo and climate control system and selection of more than 7 million points of interest (restaurants, lodging, airports, shopping malls, etc.). All this information is also accessible through a dash-mounted touch screen and assorted knobs and switches. Using time of day and direction of travel, this calculates the sun's position relative to the car to adjust side-to-side interior temperatures to maintain desired settings.  high performance tires are optional 200) with the 6-speed manual transmission.  also available, though not initially, is a sport suspension package called a-spec. This includes firmer springs and shock absorbers, unique 18-inch wheels wearing z-rated yokohama tires, aero/ground effects body pieces, special steering wheel, upgraded brake pads for cars with the automatic transmission and bragging-rights body badges. walkaroundacura's stylists kept the image of a soccer player in mind as they sketched the 2004 tl: a wide, solid stance; tall and lean, with muscular lines; and compact and coiled, tensed, ready to move in any direction with quickness, certainty and precision. This design philosophy may sound forced, or even melodramatic, but a close look at the car's proportions and styling cues gives it credence.  while maintaining approximately the same wheelbase as the '03 model (a mere 0. 2 inches shorter), the '04 tl has shaved more than half a foot off its overall length. It's an inch and a half wider, riding on tires spread an inch farther apart in front and two inches farther apart in the rear. It's fully three inches taller. Despite all these added increments, it claims one of the lowest coefficients of drag (0. 29 cd) of any sedan of its class sold in the u. S.  the strong, chin-like front end is braced by two, low-mounted openings feeding cooling air to the engine, the minimalist grille serving primarily to frame the acura badge and trademark polished horizontal bar. Squinting headlights wrap around the front fenders, drawing the eye to the character line that begins in the side light just forward of the front door, integrating the perfectly aligned door handles and running the length of the car to terminate in the rear side-marker lights. Molded rocker panels beneath the doors (with chip-resistant finish) visually widen the car's lower body. Fender flares stretch the body over and wrap snugly around the tires. The tallish greenhouse tapers gracefully inward rising from the beltline, giving geometric balance to the rake of the windshield and backlight. The c-pillar, or sail, flows smoothly down onto the trunk lid, adding substance and solidity to the rear quarters and embellishing the tl's mild, wedge-like profile.  what most other drivers will see of the tl, the back end, looks like, well, a honda. This isn't necessarily bad, although it does come across as a bit conservative when considered along with the dramatic styling of the rest of the car. The trailing edge of the trunk lid is sharply crested, with a pleasing kamm-like aero-overhang. Taillights are severely functional. The black surround setting off the rear license plate is a bit loud. But all the body sculpturing produces surface planes generating some exciting shadows, and dual exhausts with squarish tips in matching lower bumper cutouts boost the sporty image, as do tires pushed out to the car's edge. interiorthe melding of function with form works extremely well in the acura tl's comprehensively re-worked interior.  easy-on-the-eyes, backlit, blue-around-white, led gauges look out from inside three pods tucked under a hood shading them from noon-time sun. A large, round speedometer sits directly in front of the driver and is centered on the steering column, which is also properly centered on the driver's seat. To the left is a slightly smaller, but no less legible tachometer. The righthand pod contains the fuel and water temperature gauges.  top most in the center stack is the lcd screen that displays the climate control and audio system settings and selections and, when so optioned, the navigation system's visual aids. With the optional navigation system comes a line of pda-like buttons and cursor controller arrayed beneath the screen. Bracketing the screen are perpendicular rows of large, finger-friendly buttons for setting driver and front passenger climate control preferences; noteworthy is the presence of an off switch for when the outside weather begs to be enjoyed. The moonroof switch is located on to the overhead control pod, more intuitive than having it on the dash.  below is the control head for the sound system, containing the six-disc cd changer and cassette player, the latter useful for books on tape. Large, round knobs adjust volume and tuning/tone/fade/balance. Right-sized station preselect buttons easily pass the fingernail/winter glove test.  the much-touted dvd-audio 5. 1 surround sound system fell short of expectations. Granted, the sound was physically more surrounding, but it was no fuller or richer. We're not audio experts, but we recall the dimensional depth dolby added to analog recordings as being a bigger leap forward.  comfortably bolstered seats brace thighs and shoulders against lateral forces during spirited cornering. Seat bottom cushions could extend a bit more beneath the thighs, but overall are quite supportive without being overly firm. The b-pillars are indented in their forward edges about mid-height to make a little more elbow room for front seat occupants. Oddly, in that the new tl is some three inches taller than the '03, front seat headroom is actually down by more than an inch, while rear seat passengers gain only half an inch.
